All the maples Japanese and otherwise in my yard are really starting to leaf out. Same with what I think is a wild cherry and a red bud?

Oh, and all the pictures are as clear as mud 🤣

I got this end of the summer last year and somehow I kept it alive. All winter forgot about it quite a bit. It was on my front porch.

Starting to bud so thought I would get it planted before it’s too late…

It’s about two years old (I guess) hopefully in 5 to 10 it’ll look similar to the two pictures I posted with more of the white/light leaves

@northsouthdenimguy that reminds me to get some more trees for our garden. definitely something japanese in front of the house, and also some espalier trees towards the neighbours on one side.

Other than the initial landscaping around the house when we first bought it and renovated, I really haven’t added much in terms of new plants or trees. I’m fortunate the original owner was a horticulturist with a serious buying habit, kind of like some of you all with IH. 😜

I’d like to start bringing in a few things that complement what’s already here. It’s been cool seeing different species from around the world on some of these posts.

That said, I also know I may not be able to do everything I’d like. My first priority is always looking for plants that are drought tolerant since I don’t have irrigation and don’t plan on installing it. If I can still achieve a certain look while keeping things low maintenance and water conscious, that’s the goal.

@northsouthdenimguy i'm not much of a gardener myself. but drought is an issue over here as well.
we had a line of spruce trees on the rear of the property, they all had to come down because the bark beetle killed them (happens to lot of forests here). a bunch of coniferes died because of the warm summers as well.
i'm heavily relying on the recommendations of my gardening guy to recommend (and plant) the right stuff.

Crazy how much these maples filled out within the last couple weeks.

120 bags of mulch. I’m trying to get the energy at the moment to start putting it down…

@northsouthdenimguy good luck! We do about 5-6 yards of mulch every spring. Takes a day or two and always looks good afterwards but I curse during the process.

Thankfully the Boston Ivy has filled most of the planted and natural areas over the last 4-5 yrs, year round green ground cover.

I should have timed it to have the yard guys put it down earlier this week but I kind of thought it would be good exercise for me…

Edit: I’m waiting for the sun to go away 😆

For anyone in the US, an awesome nursery in my town does about 80% of their business via online/shipping (Singing Trees Nursery). Amazing place, amazing people, amazing plants. I am not affiliated with them, but it's my go to nursery and have bought many plants from there, and often visit for just a walk in their display gardens.

They specialize in rhododendrons (with many of their own created hybrids). They also have many cultivars of azaleas, dogwoods, hydrangea, some Japanese maples, dwarf conifers, heaths/heathers, hellebores, and other rare and cool plants. But rhododendron is definitely their main thing with 100s of different ones and hard to find ones. You can also sign up for a weekly news letter, where each week has a garden tip of the week, many cool plants and sale plants featured. They have some good testimonials for shipping, though I have no experience since I am local. Their website, I think is the best nursery website I've ever come across. Thought I'd share for anyone who might be interested in a rhodie or other hard to find/cool plant.
