Nice @1WayTrip - it's my grail watch. Looks great on both the rubber strap and the bracelet.

Watch story time. Not sure if this belongs here, so feel free to move or delete it. I just find it funny.

I have always liked Panerai. I know a lot of people dislike them because they are big or because of the celebrity association with guys like Sylvester Stallone, but I love the simplicity of the design, especially the California. I also think my wrists are big enough to pull one off.

There is one specific watch I have been seeing for years. The first time I seriously looked at it was about ten years ago. In 2015 I made an offer of $5,500 which was immediately declined. I made a couple more offers up to around $5,600. At the time it was listed somewhere under $7,000, around $6,900 if I remember right.

I saw it again last night and clicked on it, but I am no longer allowed to make an offer because I have made too many in the past. What I find funny is that more than ten years later they still have not sold it. Just imagine what they could have done with that $5,600 over the years buying and flipping other watches. Who knows what they paid for it, maybe they overpaid back then, but it still seems silly to me.

The ironic part is that about seven years ago I moved to the same city where the shop is located. I could walk in and see it in person, but at this point I do not even really want it anymore. To me it is not worth more than $4,500 at best.

There’s only a handful of watches where i would spend “crazy” money, Panerai is not one of them.

@northsouthdenimguy I completely agree with this. There are a few others. Actually, Rolex is basically on that list for me anymore. I won't submit to AD hijinks and I'm not spending $15k on a stainless steel watch with a 30 year old movement in it, in house or not. I have a couple, all bought in the midst of COVID depression on the grey market. I'll likely keep them, but I wouldn't do it again.

I think that no one will disagree that Rolex make about a million watches a year. I take my hat off to them because they have managed to make what is a relatively common watch (in medium/high end watch terms) into so many peoples "must have". I don't dislike them, and had a couple of early GMT's, but to my mind there are so many better watches for the money out there........That is unless you want people to recognise what you are wearing, which I don't.

I understand why people feel that way about Rolex but I like their watches. There is nothing else at that level that I can wear on a job site, beat up, and not worry about, especially with the Sea-Dwellers I own.

That said, I passed on a couple of watches recently and have not heard from my AD since. I honestly do not care. I am not playing those games.

There are a few vintage pieces I am interested in, but I probably will not buy anything new. Well except for the no date sub. Oh and the Pepsi on an oyster bracelet but other than that, I’m not buying anything new. 😂

Which is one of the ones I had.......I sold it (way tooo cheap 🙂 ) to fund my 50 fathoms....Which in all the years I have been wearing it, only one person has recognised....

                                  Darn…

Actually, the funny thing is I really only wear one watch now. I will occasionally switch it up, but it has been months or maybe years since I switched it up on a daily or even every few day basis. I am getting to the point where I think I only need two watches: an everyday piece and the one I’ve always dreamed of.

Edit: I don’t know all their different model numbers, etc. but I’m sure like everybody else in the world I love this one or the modern one. IMG_1304.png

I’m about to make your shit list, but I think there are similarities… and as somebody that really likes Rolex, I don’t see it as a bad thing. So here we go it was nice “knowing”’you.😳

Rolex and Iron Heart are similar because neither tries to be the most artistic or niche. They focus on durability, consistency, and long-term reliability. There may be more interesting options at the same price, but very few brands execute “classic and overbuilt” as consistently. Safe done right becomes timeless.
