@FlavourFade Yeah a post said the details about it would be announced in a January newsletter.
I think I signed up for a newsletter but haven't received anything. -
I keep checking mine, thinking the balance on the black Sashiko will be there…
-
@goosehd My bad. They had sent a newsletter in January, but it announced other stuff and just had a short mention about them getting the Denim Wills ready for preorder.
-
As much as I love consistency, I would probably do it the exact same way if I was running a tiny company that released one piece every few months, and didn’t want my life consumed by the business. My custom boot guy is the same way. “You’ll get it when you get it.”
@FlavourFade said in Ship John:
@…the lack of communication mixed with announcing or not announcing "surprise" launches and then having like two pairs of each sizes is really annoying.
-
Yeah, I’m curious about my shirt, but it doesn’t bother me one bit. I’ve ordered enough stuff from small makers to know this is just how it goes sometimes. Sure, it’s a little annoying when you want to wear something before it’s too hot or the season passes, but whatever. I’ll have a nice fresh shirt come October, so it all works out.
Same with the releases. It’s just his quirkiness and the way he’s evolved doing it. But it does make you focus way too much on trying to figure out when things are actually going to drop. That part can get time consuming, especially if you’re a weirdo like me who wants to make sure you don’t miss something.
-
I’ll wait as long as I need to, BUT when an expectation is created by putting things like “delivery by X at the latest” and then barely communicating what’s going on when it’s now been close to 3 months past the “latest” delivery date is really frustrating. I get it. Stuff happens. I work in an industry where back ordered items could be months and months out.
As I’ve said before and something I firmly stand by, under promise, over deliver. I would’ve rather they said shirts will be shipping by March, and then be stoked if I got it in February, but alas… Yeah I’m going to keep buying ship john stuff. The products are incredible. It’s just really frustrating to get no updates on something like this.
-
@Go-For-Chill Great point. And also agree with the other messages above.
I guess it will be even more special and feel unique if I manage to secure an item from them.
I suppose a part of me would not be drawn to them if they were common. In that case I would probably just stick with IH only. Not a fan of ultra limited runs of anything by default, but surely I am not the only one to admit it is really cool to own something that not many others do.
-
I definitely don’t disagree with you. I’ve had certain things from makers over the years where it really has irked me. But for some reason this shirts timeline isn’t bothering me. ?
-
@northsouthdenimguy at this point of succumb to the idea of I'll get it when I get it. Its more about the principle of thinking as a customer of a product we were "guaranteed" 3 months ago, that there should be some sort of updates every other week or so... like now certain sizes have shipped, but everyone else is left in the dark... like obviously every day that passes is a day closer to getting it, but its still just really frustrating... and beyond that, seeing other products/shirts release before the shirts that are long past overdue is also annoying. I get it, maybe they are outsourced to different makers, but still its just tough to see
-
Everybody has a different threshold for this stuff. Like I said, it really does not bother me that much. I see the same thing with Nicks when they do special releases or push quick ship boots out faster as part of a promo. That is just the nature of business, whether you are a small maker or a mid sized boot company trying to manage cash flow and demand. I do not discount how you feel about it. It is just not how I look at it.
And if I am being honest, I usually just buy a bunch of other stuff in the meantime to get the dopamine hit anyway.
-
@northsouthdenimguy yeah I’ve been buying other stuff I have just wanted this shirt so badly. I wear my indigo so much I just want to start breaking in the black one. But it’ll come eventually. Until then I just keep finding other stuff to buy hahah
-
@Go-For-Chill @northsouthdenimguy I get how you see it and it's not something that would draw me away from buying sj. I just waited 4.5 months for a pair of boots but there was better communication and reliability in terms of questions getting answered. I don't care that much that the denim wills is not announced yet or if I get my preordered guthries in april or may, but I just think they build up an expactation they can't fulfill. It's his way of making business and it's totally okay for everybody who is buying his stuff for years but as a newbie who got into the sj rabbitt hole it's a harder pill too swallow.
Also for me personally I can't afford buying 400$ shirts every month so if SJ announces something I want that never gets available and then IH drops for example a 409 rerun I will have to decide very quickly if I wait or just go with IH

I think that’s why having a strong team in place makes businesses work. Some guys are dreamers and come up with great ideas, however that don’t see anything to fruition. Some guys can’t do anything other than what they know and need the creativity of others for inspiration. They can make those ideas work and are often great in doing so.
It’s that balance that every business needs in order to succeed. Then there is the hard part of doing what you do well, but being unable to admit when things don’t work out the way you want. It’s hard to deal with 1, 100, or 1000 people being upset when something you’ve worked on hasn’t turned out the way you want. It’s easier to try and ignore the problem which in turn creates other problems.
Long story short, we’re all human. Good at some things, bad at others.
-
You’re spot on with all your points.
I know we are going to beat this to death, but I had already typed something up, so I am going to post it and leave it at that. You really hit it on the head about ignoring it. So many people do that in business, or at least in my line of work.
If I take myself out of not really caring, I can see the other side of it.
At the very least, I think it would be nice to get an update every 30 days on anything that has passed its original completion timeframe.
Something simple like, “We told you we are working through the smaller sizes and expect to start XL, XXL, and XXXL by this date.” Then when that date passes and they have not started, maybe another update. I do not think that is asking too much.
Also, for as small of a ship as SJ is, Mike certainly knows exactly what is going on and could communicate in that way. He chooses not to, and you are expected to like it.

All that being said, that is part of the quirks and specialness of SJ.

Instagram promises some good news for people waiting for preorders ''soon''.
I actually went and emailed them politely suggesting if they could do the drops at some time that works for us poor euros so it's not at 2am on a weekday (unless they announce them). No harm trying right?
