This drum tutorial popped up on YouTube and I wanted to share with fans of Geese and the many drummers and percussionists here on the forum. I love this song and find the drum part really interesting, especially after watching this cover. It also looks really hard to me but wanted to hear from guys who would actually know…looking at you @Jett129

@SKT It’s a really cool groove and the drummer in the video is GREAT. It is really difficult. Watch it again and watch his Hi-Hat,which never ever stops, which is really cool but in and of itself, but he’s also playing quarter notes on it the entire time,as opposed to just opening and closing on 2 and 4. The Hi-Hat kind of acts as a metronome and along with his ride cymbal, playing straight quarter notes, which is also constant ,anchors the beat. All the magic happens between his snare and bass drum, and the wonderful fills he takes and lands every time. I saw Geese on SNL and didn’t know what to make of them. The drummer in this clip reminds me of J.D. Beck. I’ll try and find a clip of him.

@Jett129 JD is so so good. I saw him on Austin City Limits and various YouTube vids. Really impressive. I’m a little surprised by the song choices for Geese’s SNL spots but I get why they picked them. Thanks for breaking down that drum part…I don’t always get the technical aspects but I do love the groove. and you’re right about the high hat being the metronome. The choices make for an awesome overall sound.

I saw Greyson playing the drums for Whiplash the film live in London recently.

I have since been digging into the old big band drummers based on his performance.

I was surprised to learn he is the current drummer for Sepultura. I am a metalhead and Sepultura fan, but frankly, he makes the metal stuff look pedestrian vs the jazz.

@Bridger he just announced another tour with them this morning. I started following him when it was just the big band stuff. A wild change in style but nothing wrong with that!

@Bridger Someone had stolen my snare drum,my mother lent me $90 to buy a new one. I went with a friend to the legendary Manny’s music store in NYC,and as we’re walking up to the drum counter my friend sees Mitch Mitchell and points him out to me. I go over say hi and strike up a conversation…What was he getting, what would he be doing in the future? He couldn’t have been nicer ,more personable. After he had left the salesman brings me my new snare drum, and in my excitement at meeting Mitch Mitchell,I put the $90 down on the counter and someone took it. Borrowed another $90 from my girlfriend and went back again the next day and bought the drum, which I still have. My brother was working as a stage hand at an outdoor venue in NYC,and Ginger Baker’s Airforce was the headliner. I was back stage and watched him do this absolutely mind boggling drum solo that was so intense that at one point his shirt split open in the back. After the show I saw him walking around backstage. I got a pen and a piece of paper, and went up to him and said that was the most amazing drumming I had ever seen, could I have your autograph? To which he replied…Fuck Off Man it’s not cool, turned his back and walked away from me. Prior to his death I was known to say…If he was on fire,I wouldn’t piss to put him out. I’ve never seen the documentary about him but apparently there are lots of stories like that about him.
