probably an even more unpopular opinion

Overall, I prefer the aesthetic of denim with sneakers. I’ve never been that interested in the look of “heritage” clothing, and by that I mean clothes that are designed with a previous time in mind. I totally see the appeal of rugged clothing with a pair of well made boots, but I’m just not interested in looking like a logger from the PNW, or a biker from the 50s. Nothing wrong with those looks at all, but I just feel like I’m wearing a costume. For some reason, whenever I wear my (limited supply of) boots with denim, I feel a bit like I’m in a costume or dressed as a throwback. While I definitely wouldn’t say no to a nice pair of Whites, Wesco, or Rolling Dub Trio boots, the price tag and my experience of wearing boots always pulls me back from splurging.

This is one of the main reasons I’m drawn to IH above other brands in this space; for example I love the look and quality of adjacent brands like Mister Freedom, but I know I’d feel like I’m cosplaying if I wore those clothes. The brands that I’ve been consistently drawn to in this space, to my eye, do not look like “heritage” brands; of course they take some inspiration from the past but aren’t defined by it, and as a result I don’t feel conspicuous wearing it. Wearing a pair of Iron Heart jeans with New Balance, Nikes or Vans feels like a much better pairing than with say Mister Freedom and the aforementioned sneakers.

So yeah, the combination of aesthetic, comfort and variety from sneakers appeals to me, and I don’t think they are a mismatch for Iron Heart as much as other they would be with other brands.

I have been wearing New Balance for the last 18 months or so regularly and it's ruined Converse for me which feel way too flat and uncomfortable to wear in comparison. I love the look of both, just find sneakers way more convenient for the day to day.

@sabergirl, Chelsea boots are my go to as well. In fact, I have a pair of blunnies, which come to think of it are probably my version of crocs!

@DeeDee85, good shout on the Moonstar sneakers.

Great post @jerkules – I will now add cosplay to my list of interests on bumble 😊

I figured comfort would be the main response to my post. 95% of the people on stage at Back to the Beginning were wearing trainers, including Ronnie Wood who was rockin’ the Jerry Seinfeld look.

            So….anyone else into cosplay?

I've got a pair of Solovair Chelsea boots that I wore all winter, which are my go to's apart from NB. Funnily enough I was looking at boots for next Fall, not a lot out there that caught my eye. Rogue Territory did a Chelsea boot with a white vibram sole a few years back which I really like

I had a pair of Chelsea Ranchers for a few years and enjoyed them; however, when it came to replacing the soles and side elastics, the cost was prohibitive, and they have since stopped making them.

When looking for a replacement, I wanted something with a beefy tread that I could wear on ski trips.

I ended up with Gardener Commandos, which I liked when I first got them, but I'm not sure the quality warrants the price.

@Bridger, I grew up wearing “proper” shoes so trainers always feel a bit weird in everyday life. I do have two pairs of canvas shoes (Moonstar and North Sea Clothing) for summer use but I still mostly wear leather shoes/boots.

Supplementary unpopular opinion: comfort is overrated – a certain degree of suffering should be tolerated if you want to look good! Some might say I need to suffer more 🤣

I don’t vibe with trainers (aside from old fashioned vulcanized sneakers) or sandals and jeans either. Just doesn’t hit that sort of heritage looks and to my eye is a bit disjointed. And I think you can find classic shoes that are comfortable.

That said, this summer I’ve just been dressing like a dirtbag in technical apparel for the most part. Too damn hot around here for jeans. Style has gone out the window with combos like IH dobby shirt or a sun hoody, climbing pants or shorts, and Bedrock or Birkenstock sandals. I still feel naked without a belt so I’ve biased towards pants with integrated webbing belts (some IH easy pants/shorts with that would be amazing).

                          Think it, be it.

I totally get the aversion to the Cosplay aspect of the “heritage” style thing. I like to call it the Mumford and Sons look. While I think it looks cool on other people it’s not my thing. I think that’s why I’ve been a bit shy about warming up to wearing vests. I do love the one I have though.
I think that’s why Iron Heart hits so wonderfully for many of us. Strikes a perfect balance with timeless jeans and flannels and jackets that somehow fit all eras including the present. Many other denim brands do tend to live in the past style wise.
I do love my boots. Always have and always will. They were my first real passion when it came to adding style to my wardrobe (other than my early obsession with cardigans and purple hair ala Kurt Cobain). I do think denim and boots are the perfect combo and you don’t have to look like Marlon Brando to rock a pair of engineers or the like. A well worn pair of jeans and boots is as timeless as it comes.
But a cool pair of sneakers and jeans is just as timeless. Of course “cool” is in the eye of the beholder…or in many cases “comfort = cool” is the apex “I don’t give a fuck” attitude.
Of course let’s be real here…there is no “I bought this at Costco cause it’s comfortable” thread on this forum that I’m aware of.

Personal Opinion: Seinfeld is a genius comedically. Not stylistically.

In the easy chair with my boots on, melted whiskey in my hand. Could'na been asleep for more than three hours...time to go to work again...

Sneakers, jeans, and an oversized button down tucked so that it blouses at the belt. If it’s a special night, that paired with an oversized sports coat with exaggerated shoulder padding.

Yeah at no point in sartorial history was that a stylish look. Sorry, Jerry 🤣

Also (UnpopOp incoming) I’m not sure Jerry is that funny. He was the least funny of the main characters IMO, which is hugely ironic since he was a comic in the show. I think Larry David and the cast are the main forces behind what made Seinfeld great.

I think Converse, Vans, Jordans, Sambas ans Samba-like sneakers, and some others are timeless. I can’t say I feel that way about a spongy soled trainers, New Balance, etc... great for running I guess but I don’t even like their performance in the gym, much less their appearance with jeans, on me.

                              $0.02

@mclaincausey Yeah...I think Seinfeld is really good at knowing what is funny and how to layout those ideas. His stand-up never moved me, but the sitcom was about the greatest bit of television ever created in my opinion. Seinfeld the show would have flopped with out LD and the cast around him!

@Mizmazzle agreed. Think about how funny Julia Louis-Dreyfus was and continued to be in Veep. Michael Richards was hilarious until his dark side came out in that racist rant. Jason Alexander was absolutely brilliant as “Larry David.” And *Curb Your Enthusiasm * demonstrates how funny LD really is.

If I look at Jerry’s performance within and beyond Seinfeld it’s observational humor with zero edge.

I did love his reactions as the “straight man” in Seinfeld but I’d never go see a set by him.

Seinfeld the show is one of my all-time favorites. If you find the show funny I think you have to include Jerry in that equation because it’s literally just a mirror of LD and him making shit up they think is funny. Have you guys ever watched “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”? That entire thing rides pretty exclusively on Jerry and his interactions with that episode’s guest and some of them are hilarious imo. I think more recently though it could be said that Jerry can come across as punching down and/or mean. Bummer
