@Daniel-San Dom St Peter Regensburg of course. The most beautiful city in Bavaria, if not Germany
-
@Tago-Mago
ah ok , hometown. never been there, but looks awesome
-
@Daniel-San Regensburg is definitely worth a visit. Loads of history, medieval city centre and bridge, Walhalla down the road, 4 Michelin-starred restaurants including Michelin-starred sushi if you’re into that kind of thing, plenty of bars and restaurants. Came here to study 20 years ago and never left, apart from moving to a village just outside of Regensburg

@Tago-Mago
sounds like I have to visit you some day -
@Tago-Mago Sounds like a good IH meet up venue.
Looks like some nice work going on there?
-
@Mister_Brue they have the workshop attached to the cathedral. In the 20 years I've lived here they've had scaffolding up most years
-
@Tago-Mago Ah yes, I think we discussed this. Good to see.

@Mister_Brue The gothic cathedral was built 1275-1520 to replace a romanesque church that had burnt down. Only one tower of the previous church remains to this day on the north side of the cathedral. Construction of the spires was actually only begun in the 19th century, so from beginning to completion took 600 years. The plinth on which the spires are built is exactly half the height of the towers. This is a view from the north prior to construction of the spires:

You can also clearly see the romanesque tower.

@Tago-Mago @Tago-Mago It sounds like it’s been under scaffolding since about 1280.
I like the fact that the old tower is called the “donkey tower”. Very interesting history, thank you.

@Mister_Brue one building that's even more fascinating is the Stone Bridge crossing the Danube, the oldest bridge in Germany apparently. Built 1135-1146 it was so good they didn't bother to build another bridge in Regensburg for 800 years. Also the template for among others the Charles bridge in Prague. The bridge made Regensburg a wealthy city as it was the only bridge across the Danube between Ulm and Vienna when it was built
