@Giles Top Gear took a Kia EV3 from Adelaide to Darwin. They didn't have any range anxiety except for the leg between Coober Pedy and Ghan, which was about 300 miles. I'm sure that the network in the UK is better.

My brother runs a Toyota bz4X, and the only issues he's had are in the far north of Scotland during the winter, when the cold reduces range.

The best strategy with an EV, as @Tobi alluded to, is to charge from 20% to 80% of battery capacity.

If you're looking for something small and quick, Lexus is bringing the LBX Morizo RR to the UK in the near future. This basically has the engine from the bonkers Toyota Yaris GR in a more civilised package.

@Giles we just got an x1 last year and loving it so far. it's nothing like the range of specs you get in the uk but bmw in the last few years has quite the technological advantage. the 5 series does look really good despite the complaints about its weight with the M5

heading to Italy at the end of the year and also potentially looking at renting the Tesla model Y. will be my very first road trip in a fully electric vehicle..

We have a tesla model-3 (well my wife does, though it was mine at the start). that car rules - so much less hassle/maintenance vs. my combustion engine car. Its a joy to drive, fast as fuuuck and comfortable. It does shred tires though, we're on our 3rd set and seem to be getting 20k on average. we just put some EV rated tires on it so we'll see how those fair.
I guess my only 'complaint' is that you can't really wrench on an eV, those things are like UFOs - so if that's your thing its not really an option.

I gave you my point of view. Don’t waste your time trying to convert me. I’m too old and ugly to go through the hassle. I love doing impromptu shit, and whizz off down backroads (the smaller and less trodden it looks, the better) and shit, if I could not do that because I was worried about how much charge I had, my enjoyment of the journey would be compromised. Fuck tgat….

I love my Subarus and would gladly get the electric Soltera. My wife hates spending money though and the Soltera won’t fit in the back of my closet.

@Giles yup - charge anxiety is real..and going offroading/camping with an ev is a gamble. Sure the Rivians are cool inside + out, but i have yet to see one in the elements and off-grid. I did see a cybertruck stuck in the sand, oh and an ev ford mustang (which I pulled out with my Land Cruiser!)...

I buy cars outright, no loans, finance etc and keep them a long time so an EV makes no sense, massive battery costs if it goes wrong, and in my experience of battery powered things (phones, cameras etc) the batteries will fail in the next 10 years.

I get why they work for some people, just not me. And I agree with Giles that they are an interim solution, I can't see how they are properly scalable in the UK.

We bought a very low mileage 3 year old 320d in 2020 and it's been brilliant, no plans to change it at the moment.

In the UK we are lucky to have a drive with plenty of space to charge so an electric car works for my wife’s long commute. We regularly drive to the south of France, and worked out that getting there isn’t a problem but when we get there it would be challenging. We have an A6 Allroad too, so that’s our comfortable cruiser.

I’ve got a weird car history.

                      From the start:
                      Alfa Romeo Spider
                      Ford Fiesta
                      Ford Fiesta
                      Ford Fiesta
                      Ford Fiesta ST
                      Aston Martin V8 Vantage
2007 Land Rover Defender 110 Double Cab
                      Audi A6 allroad

Can you guess when my dad stopped working for Ford?

Broken old houses, boring Scottish whisky, weird Japanese denim, all French wine, sad American music, wool socks in summer.

I still miss the ST, and the Alfa but the allroad is a do everything car that is hard to beat for my needs. And the old boy I bought it from specced it to match his Bentley, and paid £8k for the paint!

Bonus photo of old man Audi, our dog Gus in the Vantage and the only place he was allowed in an F430.

Man, my stepdad had one of these in the 80s. I had a matching Hot Wheels and he did body work so he painted his iridescent purple and painted my Hot Wheels to match. He’s a good dude.

Love the tires on this one. Kind of gives it a Hot Wheels feel.

Marylebone just now. There's a McLaren around the corner but this is cooler.

In terms of beautiful, I would say the Ferrari GTO 250, Toyota 2000 GT or an E-Type (I even have a sweet spot for a Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA junior).

I do 25-30k a year so an electric is a no for me. Too many long trips and then worrying if I can get a charge at the hotel or traffic and a mid journey charge leaves me late. The cost here of charging outside the home is ridiculous. Plus I would miss the noise! Last car before I retire and I still get 37mpg!
