Has anyone had trouble with getting a good fitting boot when going the custom route? Batting 0 for 2 and not sure what the deal is. Obviously I'm reaching out to them but curious if it's just me. Mods feel free to delete if this doesn't belong or your concerned.

Good question @pechelman I was thinking the same thing. I have my first custom order with them now. I have a feeling it must work pretty well if you follow all instructions otherwise they probably wouldn’t offer that mail in measurement option. I was worried about maybe the tape was too loose or too tight or I wasn’t sitting right etc. I had my wife to the measurements and at the end of the day I think there is probably some wiggle room with the leather stretching and other little things you could do to improve the fit if it’s not perfect. Obviously though it hasn’t worked out for you twice now. I just sort of took the measurements sent them off and hope for the best.

          Thanks @deanclean
I ended up deciding to get measured at Wesco to make sure it was measured right. Still haven't written my message to Chris yet. Right now I have no idea how I ever fit into a standard last pretty well and ended up with such bad fits, twice.

I personally have to use a boot jack, especially for the right foot, no matter the sock whether it be wool or cotton, all the time to take mine off and have had mine since 2020. I feel embarrassed saying this. Are there even videos to show how to take off engineer boots, in general? I know The Shop has made a video about putting them on(Wesco), but nobody, no matter the brand has made a video about taking them off without a boot jack. That’s the only frustrating thing for me when it comes to engineer boots.

You're not alone. Several years ago, after I discovered the Mr Lou, I desperately wanted a pair, but no manner of trying was going to make it fit on my high-volume, high-instep, triangle-shaped feet. I even rode one of my motorcycles up to Wesco to try on as many different versions as they had. No dice. Le sad.

Chris from Wesco then suggested a custom pair with the same horsehide teacore leather on a different last. I was thrilled! I measured at home with the help of my sweet wife, though was unsure. So I had Chris measure on another trip up. Partway through the build, he sent the uppers for me to try on and they seemed to fit, so I had the boots completed.

When they showed up, they were beautiful and took some time to settle in. But even now, after several years of irregular wear, they never seem to fit correctly. Unless I have all but the thickest wool sock on, they will blister my heels, so they remain mainly a winter boot for me.

What's frustrating for me is that I have several pairs of cowboy boots, Tecovas mainly, that all fit better than most lace boots and oxford shoes. Cowboy boots share a similar shape and construction, so I know something like an engineer could fit well, but I'm not sure where the disconnect exists.

The poor fit isn't so bad as to make the boots unwearable, they just don't have the snug, conforming fit I've come to expect from a cowboy boot.

Wesco retains my measurements, so if I were go to the custom route again, i would certainly add my feedback to the order from my last pair in the hopes that the boots would be dialed for my fit.

I use a boot jack for nearly all of my boots, engineer, cowboy, lace-up; all of them. It's pretty standard.

Getting a fair amount of crocking on these. Something I usually try and keep to a minimum but embracing it on this pair.

@pechelman I have two custom pairs and they both fit quite well. What I noticed that it really depends on the choice of leather. I have a burlap rough out and a Horween waxed flesh. Since the burlap is significantly softer, they fit like a glove with the perfect amount of wiggle room, easily my best fitting boot. The waxed flesh is way harder and sturdier. It feels tighter than the burlap. The non custom pairs fit equally well.

Thanks @Dmart. It's a bit of a bummer but Chris has been great through this. Unfortunately, they can't help anymore and while I won't end up with boots, if anyone is looking for a pair of natural mayrams in "9D" with way more room above the toes than a standard Mr Lou, they should be going on their closeout list soon. Pretty bummed at the result.
