Since I usually hang on to mine more than a year, sometimes even longer if im happy with how things are running–--I will wait to hear more info from the people who will review theirs as they receive them.
Have to agree though--the max might be super nice.@dinobarnesberlin I've just got my iPhone 12 pro max today. had to wait till late night to test out the new upgrades to the camera. One thing I'm very impressed with is the low light photos, in portrait mode. The sensor shift technology (whereby the senor moves to accomodate movement from your hands, rather than the lens moving) in the pro MAX is the key feature that sets it apart from the normal 12 pro. so, if you take a lot of photos at night, this is extremely helpful. but also be aware that the MAX is huge, like proper massive in terms of actual feeling.
Niiice @louisbosco!!! im still waiting for it to get to my local stores so that I can hold it in my hand to check out how it will feel, by all accounts it is a total brick–but I think its what I want. Ive been reading the reviews, watching the videos and yea--night mode looks fantastic. Better than the 12 pro, but not by much.
The 11pro max prices have really dropped, but hey--I want the latest and the greatest.
What memory size did you go with?
im thinking that 128gb will be fine since that's what I currently have with my 6S plus and have only used roughly half of the capacity.

I always go with the year specific colour, in this case, pacific blue. I don't use a case at all so the colour can be shown. if you use a case, I suppose it doesn't matter because it's covered.
yeah, good choice. given the prices, I don't think the 11s are relevant. at least not in the long run, might as well get the latest since you keep yours for a few years. I've got a lot of photos stored in my phone, so I went with 256gb. My last iPhone has already used about 110gb so I really do need that 256gb. don't need the 512gb for a few years, so it's a good in between.

@louisbosco I just got back from my local MediaMarkt and held the 12pro max in my hand.
Its a done deal.
they will be here in a few weeks–-which I am surprised about since I always thought that Berlin was a major market.im going with that blue as well when I pull the trigger. It must go great with IH denim.
As cool as the 11 pro max must be---I just cant bring myself to go with older tech. -
@dinobarnesberlin I think the supply for them are also slightly constrained now with a lot of people withholding from getting it on day 1 just so they can feel the product. might be a different story for their retailers as opposed to an apple store. but I do hope you get your parcel soon and enjoy it!

I think you are correct @louisbosco. Plus with the Corona, I think deliveries may vary depending on where you are. I was able to hold the display model in my hand and its not much of a change compared to what im used to with the 6Splus in terms of size.
my friend in CaLI just bought the 12…im a bit jealous already

Ended up going to Poland last weekend to pick up the 12 pro max, since it still isn't available here in Berlin yet–which is kinda weird considering that Apple has launched a huge ad campaign all over the city for a phone that you cant even get your hands on yet.
I was lucky to get it last weekend, as they have now closed the borders again.
After a week of using it, updating it to 14.3 I can say that it is night and day compared to my old 6S plus.
The cameras alone were worth getting it, and now with the new update, Apple has introduces RAW format in portrait mode.
Did I need to spend so much on just a phone ?
No.
Do I equate the money that I spent on the phone to the same amount that I could have spent on IH gear?
Yes.But the bottom line was that my old phones battery was just about at the end of its life, and it was time to get a new one.
So that makes another item I can check off my list of things I needed....
Now I can look forward to getting more IH in 2021! -
Does anyone have the new 2024 16" MacBook Pro? I'm curious to hear your thoughts. Also, what kind of work do you do?

@seawolf All my wife has run for years are the MacBook pros. We buy a new one every 2-3 years and she currently has 2 in use with an older one in retirement, but can be used in a pinch.
Work done is viewing radiology cases via the internet. The reason why we need ones so frequently is the screens degrade with time and use affecting the brightness, which is important for the line of work.
We normally do builds with everything maxed out in drivers, memory, etc. Funny thing is that I can still hear her fans screaming trying to cool the boards down depending on the images and cases that she works on. Everyone once in a while she’ll start working on a different computer to get the first one cooled down.

@goosehd Oh wow. It sounds like you really beat them up! That's what they're for, so that's great to hear. I'm currently using my 16" MBP from 2019, and it's gotten me through most of my design program, but it's really struggling lately. I just pulled the trigger on a machine with the M4 Max chip and I'm elated. I run CAD software and GPU intensive rendering software, and I'm taking a motion graphics class the semester and it'll destroy my current machine. My current machine struggles if I have Spotify and Chrome open, so I'm excited to have some power again.

I'm currently using a mid 2013 macbook air. Think it might be time to upgrade..
I don't need the newest of the new, but what would be the oldest I should look for? I've been told to not go with anything that doesn't have the M1 chip. I'd be buying used from FB Marketplace (if they seemed legit) or possibly refurbished online.

I also had a desltop iMac that I loved when I was editing photos and such more often. I think it was a 2014 or so? I stopped using that when I moved my desk into the middle of my office and just can't seem to go back. Took the iMac off the desk since I didn't like having to have a plug running across the floor.

@chrisjohnnick Honestly, any MacBook Pro will be a massive upgrade from your 2013 Air. My 2019 MPB doesn't have an M1 chip, and I do intense digital design work and it holds up very well, all things considered. If you're a casual user, anything from the last 4 years will carry you for a long time.
@goosehd Before becoming a designer, I expected to get upwards of 10 years from a laptop. I'm thinking 4-5 years is pushing it at this point. The more power the better for sure. It future-proofs it a little bit. As content gets richer and capabilities get better, the power is never enough.

@seawolf During my 4th year of Uni., I was doing quite a bit of population modelling using math cad., and could make my desktop scream. This was about 20 years ago, but did teach me the importance of buying the right computer for the job.

I’m excited to have the right machine finally after nearly limping across the finish line. In the beginning of my program, my computer was newer but I didn’t need it for much. Now it’s getting older and I rely on it heavily and it’s showing its age.
From what I’ve read about the M4 Max chip, it going to be insanely fast and able to withstand heavy workloads.

@seawolf Make sure your key software is compatible with your hardware. At one point when Apple decided to start using their own chip, a few incompatibility issues would pop up on occasion. We saw it in our field as most of the software is quite specialized to the job.

Apple went from Motorola to Intel to ARM in a relatively short timeframe. Pretty remarkable to pull that off. They had to build a compatibility layer (Rosetta) to help with the transition as software had to be rewritten to span platforms.
I have a 4 year old entry level M1 MacBook Air. I feel like for my uses it has maybe a few more years, but it doesn’t feel like it has 6+ (to total a decade) the way Apple computers used to, especially with RAM and hard drive upgrades now off the table.
It’s unfortunate that Apple chose to solder everything in. Not a good move for consumers, hardware longevity, or the planet.

@seawolf the m4 MBP is on the cards. currently using a 2018 15" with the last or almost last generation of intel chips apple used. will be downsizing to a 14 given the weight of the 15/16. was tossing up between the new Mac mini and the MBP but decided on mobility.
the Mac Studio if they ever upgrade it (guessing m4 ultra) would be decent, but still portability is key. specs I'll most likely be going for would be to upgrade the m4 max and leave it at 48gb ram.

Apple Intelligence has potential now that it is integrated with ChatGPT, which enhances its capabilities considerably. However, the initial launch seemed premature, aimed at capitalizing on the AI hype rather than offering a robust product. The decision to simply rebrand Siri, which many found lacking in functionality, as Apple Intelligence was seen as a marketing misstep. A more thoughtful development and launch strategy might have better served the product and its users.
