I’m fine with team orders. They have to do it because there is a constructors championship. They just shouldn’t make dumb decisions that needlessly create team orders.

      Think it, be it.

@mclaincausey if it’s a 1-2 the order in which they cross the line won’t impact constructors, or am I missing something?

Team orders makes sense to me only when the faster car needs to pass the slower car safely. Or when it can be used to build a points gap for a championship opportunity (as if Piastri and Lando's roles were reversed in this example). I think McLaren demonstrated exactly how NOT to execute. That's not how you want to win your first GP. I agree with Lando: "Tell him to catch up then."

@Tago-Mago in this scenario it didn’t matter for WCC, though if Norris loses WDC by 6 or fewer points this race will be pointed to for that.

I’m just saying generally speaking, given the implications of WCC and other factors like keeping your #1 happy if there’s a big delta between your drivers’ skill relative to one another, team orders are sometimes necessary, if not for the WCC in this particular instance.

Been away a couple days. But, holy cow. What a Grand Prix! Only McLaren could have a P1 and P2 and still somehow sour the moment. Oscar drove a brilliant race, though. Also, all the radio chatter from McLaren and Red Bull was way more entertaining than it should have been. The second half of this season is gonna kick off.

@alexxedge agreed on all points. Epic silly season already started alongside an excellent racing season. Second half should be lots of fun.

Wild theory: some part of Max’s insistence on late sim nights that isn’t driven by addiction to racing is driven by a desire to compete in WEC. I’d rather see him jump to that than to another F1 team

@mclaincausey I saw a report today that he’s essentially grounded from late night sim racing, by Red Bull.

@alexxedge I saw that too. Not a bright move if they want to keep him. He’s already unhappy. Probably won’t love a 10 place grid penalty in Spa without a car that can pass the rest of the grid like it’s standing still either.

@mclaincausey Spa is about to be fun. I’m fairly new to the sport, since 2020ish, but this season rocks. My wife and I have gone back to watch races from previous seasons on the F1 app. I’m so bummed I missed out on this for so long. I never really thought I’d be into motor sports. But here we are, and I’m in.

@alexxedge I’m about the same. I enjoyed the sport as a kid as well as rally but not at the level of obsession of these past few years.

I dislike George, but that was some of the finest race craft of the whole season in my mind and a shame he was DQed even if I’m pleased Lewis got the wins.

Norris just can’t start a race well and he’s almost starting to look like the #2 at McLaren.

i was legit impressed with his ability to hold off Lewis on tires that were toast. He def earned that. But to hear that it was almost entirely tire weight that got him DQed is insane. Thats going to sting going into the summer break.

Norris def needs to work on his starts.

When I learned that they can pick up that much marbling on the in-lap after the race has completed I was shocked. It’s also insane just how much deg they lose in a race. Absolutely wild call on George to go for it, and to hold everyone off. Brilliant drive on his part, but that dude has some Leclerc level luck sometimes.

There’s a horse and cart argument too. If his car was lighter, it could explain how he was able to manage the tires so well. I don’t think he’s above everyone in the field in regards to tire management skills though obviously tons of factors to consider.

whats crazy to me is that they run that close to the weight restrictions. So close that rubber off the tires would end up so risky. makes you wonder how much extra baggage the Alpines were running early this season....
It sure didn't seem like Russell was managing his tires that carefully trying to keep Lewis behind. I think he knew it was a longshot.
