      classical

With classical it's hard not to want to file a performance by someone like Glenn Gould under his name as opposed to the composer since his personal approach to playing a peice is so specific/recognizable

@endo as I mainly have popular music, no jazz, I file by artist/band name. Classical is a tricky one. I‘d probably go with composer, say Bach for example, and then in turn sort by artist

I see you got similar challenges, possibly better solutions. Seems my sorting for ages hasn't been to bad. I put 'classical' (composer based, before 1950) and Jazz in separate sections, the rest by artist. I do have a best-like section which is an in and out, just temporarily. Had sections for 60s, 70s and so on, but that didn't work.

            I separate by genre.
Rock is in alphabetical order by artist name.

But my smaller domains classic and jazz look like a mess for an outsider…
I’ve several versions of Goldberg-Variationen for example.
They are clustered around Glenn’s version, because he is played most.

With someone like Bach or Mozart you could also use BWV or Köchel. Don’t know if this also exists for other composers

yeah, makes more sense than by conductor, soloist or whatever

One of the great things on this forum is, you meet people making a valuable recommendation of a re-issue of an 80s hardcore band, but also state that Glenn Gould's Goldberg Variations are played most. 🫶 @Aetas

I may not be very helpful as my collection is predominantly jazz (alphabetical - record label, last name, album) with a sprinkle of soul/RnB/CityPop/Dub & Reggae ( alphabetical - genre, last name, album)

Thanks @J-IV and cool your‘e sorting them by label, that seems to be significant in Jazz.

I had an intense period with Jazz to which I‘m regularly coming back once in a while. Still own most of Miles albums (plus saw him live in Paris 1987), and got a nice little collection of Blue Note releases from the late 80s/early 90s.

@endo Hearing/seeing Miles must have been wild! The late 80s/90s BN had some hidden gems - Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner, Lovano, and Tony Williams has a bunch of output if I remember correctly.

LITA comps are great! Love the artwork too. They do capsule releases on the artist here and there and that’s where a bulk of collection in the genre come from. Easier to find the music via streaming too

Since we don’t have an equipment thread, is the best place to rant? My project debut carbon evo turntable had a screw on the tonearm lift come loose on Sunday. Big design flaw, the whole tonearm assembly has to be removed in order to retighten the screw. I’ve had it less than 9 months. There are only 2 repair shops in Columbus and it’s $85 min bench fee and 4-6 week turnaround time. To. Tighten. A. Screw. 🤬

So after I dropped it off at repair shop, I bit the bullet and ordered the upgrade I’ve been eyeing, a mofi ultradeck w/ ultratracker cart. Luckily got an open box special. I’m too deep into this hobby right now to sit on the sidelines for 4-6 weeks. Plus now that I know what a pain these TTs are to get serviced, it’ll be good having a backup on hand. Feeling a bit guilty for the large unplanned spend, angry/disappointed at the project design flaw (otherwise it’s been a great table with really good sound for a noob like me) and supply/demand imbalance in the repair market, and excited for the upgrade all at once.
