Guys, this threat has revived my more than 40y old record collection. Thanks for that! 🙏 It's now in regular use again and growing. But one thing I've never had a good solution for, even when it was in the few 100s, is sorting. Alphabetical, chronological, by genre?

How do you sort your record collection?

(probably this has been over-discussed many times, still I'm interested in your opinions)

@endo alphabetized here as well although at some point I'd like to separate by genre

I go back and forth on what to do with my classical/orchestral music.
Do i alphabetize by composer, conductor or ensemble of performers ?

Jazz is typically by performer but that gets complicated when there are multiple heavy hitters on one record ( getz/gilberto, brown/roach etc...)

                classical

With classical it's hard not to want to file a performance by someone like Glenn Gould under his name as opposed to the composer since his personal approach to playing a peice is so specific/recognizable

@endo as I mainly have popular music, no jazz, I file by artist/band name. Classical is a tricky one. I‘d probably go with composer, say Bach for example, and then in turn sort by artist

I see you got similar challenges, possibly better solutions. Seems my sorting for ages hasn't been to bad. I put 'classical' (composer based, before 1950) and Jazz in separate sections, the rest by artist. I do have a best-like section which is an in and out, just temporarily. Had sections for 60s, 70s and so on, but that didn't work.

Rock is in alphabetical order by artist name.

But my smaller domains classic and jazz look like a mess for an outsider…
I’ve several versions of Goldberg-Variationen for example.
They are clustered around Glenn’s version, because he is played most.

With someone like Bach or Mozart you could also use BWV or Köchel. Don’t know if this also exists for other composers

yeah, makes more sense than by conductor, soloist or whatever

I may not be very helpful as my collection is predominantly jazz (alphabetical - record label, last name, album) with a sprinkle of soul/RnB/CityPop/Dub & Reggae ( alphabetical - genre, last name, album)

Thanks @J-IV and cool your‘e sorting them by label, that seems to be significant in Jazz.

I had an intense period with Jazz to which I‘m regularly coming back once in a while. Still own most of Miles albums (plus saw him live in Paris 1987), and got a nice little collection of Blue Note releases from the late 80s/early 90s.

LITA comps are great! Love the artwork too. They do capsule releases on the artist here and there and that’s where a bulk of collection in the genre come from. Easier to find the music via streaming too
