Any thoughts on maintenance for split steer leather jacket?
I have a black one arriving tomorrow, and I've never owned a suede jacket before.
What sort of conditioner would you use for a jacket like this?
It looks like Saphir makes a spray on Renovateur for suede that comes in neutral or black(also medium brown, dark brown, and navy). It's intended for boots, but i would expect it to work on something like this.

@CanadIan interested in feedback as well. I’ve owned mine for about 5 years (maybe more) and haven’t done anything to it. Still looks great.

I do not wear it in the rain nor snow though…

I own one of these as well. Since I live in Southern California, it does not see a lot of rain and haven't had to do anything with it in the way of maintenance.

A couple of data points not directly related to this jacket, but maybe helpful. I do have rough out on a couple pairs of Wesco boots and they have seen some rain/weather. I use a suede brush from time to time and do not apply any treatment to them. They are holding up pretty darn well. Additionally, TJ at The Shop Vancouver has commented a couple times on how he takes care of his rough out chore shirts. He openly states that most of his leather and rough out jackets sees a lot rain. His approach is to maintenance is no fuss, do nothing and beat the shit out of it approach. Based on seeing the many many pictures and videos he posts of his gear, it looks like they are holding up well to the conditions with cool looking patina.

thanks for the feedback... I'm not too far away from Vancouver, so as much as I will be trying to avoid getting it soaked it will be pretty much impossible to entirely avoid getting wet some times. Good to know that the guys from The Shop don't think much is needed. I will probably eventually get some of that Saphir spray, but it is nice to know I won't need it for a while. I intend to have this jacket super long term and I take care of my things, but I also don't view my cloths as museum pieces and prefer them looking like they have been used!
Probably going to avoid DWR style coatings with their PFAS because that is what the emergency poncho is for! May not be stylish, but it does the job in a pinch!

I want to report that this jacket is amazingly warm. I live in Chicago and this keeps me warm in 20F degree weather. I was not expecting that. This can truly be a year round jacket.

I’ve read this whole thread regarding arm length shrink. Can anyone confirm about how much they’ve gotten? Sounds like about an inch is probable.

@Mizmazzle what allegedly causes this shrinking?

I'd like to grab a brown one day, tried it on in Hamburg and it's fantastic.

Yes, I was referring to the creasing from elbow bend. 27” seems so long, but if there was an inch of creasing loss, 26” would be doable.

What's the durability like on the brown version of this jacket? Does it require lots of special care or can it be used daily and still look good? I just bought the black horsehide version of this jacket and looking for other Iron Heart jackets that have long sleeves as I have long arms. The other models of leather jackets seem to have shorter sleeves and there is a brown XL available at a store that I could order.

If anyone has both the black horsehide Type III and this one in the same size, do you find the fit is the same on them?

@neph93 hey buddy. When you bought your split steer did you go with your normal UHF size? I’m wondering if the thickness of the hide makes up for some of the larger measurements like shoulder. For example, I like an 18” shoulder in my shirts. Would a 19” shoulder in this jacket be countered by the thickness of leather at all?
