This is a Friday night I’ve been waiting for for a bit now. Morgan is out of town. Finally starting to chip away at building the Jazz genre of my collection. Picked up these classics to kick off the journey.

@GraemeE that’s sound advice. This Tone Poets “Somethin Else” sounds really good. Was going to save Out to Lunch for last due to its abstract nature and my level of drunkness coinciding together. Perhaps I’ll mix the order…

                Sound grade:

                1. Out to Lunch: holy shit. Epic 3D sound. Very holographic and tons of separation with deep dark silence behind it all. Such a fun and energetic listen.
                2. Somethin’ Else: incredible separation and forward sound. Each solo jumps out and creates dynamic listening. Track A1 has some background noise. The rest of the abum was A+
                3. A Love Supreme: I was so excited for this one. The music is obviously epic. But the verve/ acoustic sounds press was very mid and contained. Not bad, but not alive and sparkled. Like listening with blinders on. Very narrow. I’ll be looking for a better pressing.

Overall, I have to say…the Tone Poet pressings are damn fine. Gonna be looking for more. Blue Train is next on the list to get. Grant Green’s “Idle Moments” is second after that.

Tone Poet series is so good. I have not been disappointed yet. Blue Train, The Cooker, and Minor Move are the favorites of the ones I have. I hear Katinga is fire too.

@steelydan I’d love to get this pressing of ALS someday. I’ve heard mixed reviews on the UHQR releases. How does yours sound? I’ve got a couple UD1S from MoFI. I’ve had mixed success with those. I find the Analogue Productions releases to be consistently better than MoFI though.

@steelydan yeah. Ryan Smith or Kevin Gray are always a safe bet. Pressed at RTI or QRP is also a good indicator.
