@Karol Ha! Bought these two based on the two corresponding podcast episodes as well. Halfway through Ametora, that is a really interesting read.

I loved The Riddle of the Sands.

As for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, I just could not get on with it. I just felt that it was super dated and that Hunter was trying too hard. I reluctantly gave up.

The funny thing is that Riddle of the Sands was written in 1903, so is also super-dated, but fior some reason found it much more engaging....

Dammit but I’m susceptible to some “self-help” stuff and dammit again that I liked this one. Basically reinforced my beliefs about how the modern world is killing us in thousands of ways as opposed to the relatively few ways that the ancient world tried to kill our ancestors (like predators, famine, environment). And it did make me want to spend less time sitting so there’s that.

Just dug out these playing cards I picked up on Pat's Kickstarter about ten years ago.

Don't have the original box sadly, but all of the cards are still there, I absolutely love the artwork!

@GraemeE I've read most of it and need to get around to finishing the whole thing — I thought it'd be dense but it's actually a pretty entertaining read. It's basically the whole history of Japan's interpretation of American style. Recommended for sure!

But I highly recommend it after having it finally finished today. It was a really entertaining read, not as dull and dry as you might think.

Ironically the same night @popvulture recomended it I heard the author on one of the podcasts I listen to off and on

I needed to go deeper down this geeky rabbit hole!! Just ordered a copy myself!

My poor students should be thrilled with the modern developments of denim history

..when we got to our social studies unit about the California gold rush and we got to the 49ers era in San Francisco …I took a slight, 30 minute detour, and made sure they understood how denim was created in San Francisco for the gold miners and other hard workers and that Levi’s (had them point to their own jeans) was founded in that region for the purpose of tough work wear? And isn’t it interesting how the very clothes we wear today have such a cool history, etc etc…their groanings of “Mr. Mizmazzle, can we please stop talking about denim and boots all the time?”

In the easy chair with my boots on, melted whiskey in my hand. Could'na been asleep for more than three hours...time to go to work again...
