@SKT @Matt If you guys do watch it, please let me know what you think. I’m in the same boat with my girls being 12 and 7…For about 5 years all the girls wanted to watch on YouTube was Life in the Dreamhouse (Barbie) and I can still hear that song in my head.

I went to watch Oppenheimer on IMAX yesterday…great movie. Very intense ending.

          Don’t spoil it.

          I will not. 😉

About Barbie: what I heard and read is that the movie is definitely NOT a kids movie. It is more political/social.

@goosehd that show was strictly forbidden here. What a vapid and soulless piece of shit that was. We did our best to stave off the inevitable Kardashianification of our girls as long as we could.

@Matt Thankfully not having TV means that the kids have no idea who/what the Kardashian’s are 🙂

It also means that we invest a ton of time into extracurricular activities which are slowly wearing me out, but it keeps the kids out of trouble.

Swimming, sailing, golf, and tennis for right now. Contemplating a martial arts class sometime soon so that they have an understanding of how to defend themselves.

We try to mix it up. Screens are the last resort usually but as they get older we get more tired of entertaining they get more and more of it. Extracurriculars are so expensive and time consuming that we eventually yield to their pleas for quitting after a few months or years if we’re lucky.

That Dreamhouse show was pure hot garbage though. After seeing 5 minutes of it I immediately instituted a ban. That’s why the movie appeals to me and to them frankly. They’re jaded cynics at 9 and 11 so I feel like I’ve done my part.

Even though Barbie has a 12 rating there were lots of kids younger than that in the showing that Clara and I went to. They seemed to enjoy it, even though it definitely is not a kids movie. I think there’s enough physical comedy and fun design elements to keep them interested and the deeper stuff probably just goes over their heads? I’d have no issues taking my kids but then I don’t have any kids.

@goosehd I don’t have kids (yet, I hope) but from what I see from my friends they’re gonna kick your ass at some point figuratively. Enrolling them in a martial arts class seems like aiding and abetting so they can also kick you ass literally

@Matt @goosehd keep forgetting to post this but we took our kids to see Barbie. Son is 12 and daughter is 9. I thought it was absolutely freaking brilliant. We all loved it for different reasons and while some of the themes went over the kid’s heads it was a great conversation starter. My wife and I are still talking about it. Highly recommended

Saw this last night. Well … really nice filming (colouring, cgi, etc), heart-warming story, … but (blockbuster-typically) no comprehensible developement of characters (there is basically only one), and quite dimmwitted in regards of geopolitics and the AI issue, which would allow so much more deepness (eg Bladerunner, 1982 of course). Worth for entertaiment, but you need to switch off higher brain functions.

@mclaincausey I really enjoyed it, but do think the 3rd act was hideously drawn out and monotonous. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it was necessary to fulfil Nolan's vision, and to appease purists from a historical accuracy standpoint, but for me (average Joe) that last hour could've been cut to 10/15 minutes and I'd have a better lasting impression of the movie.

Not supposed to long films at all though. Killers of the Flower Moon was possibly my favourite of all times, was captivated from the go and I can't remember the last time I've felt so connected to a story and its characters.
