Thanks, guys. Here's two more for your entertainment - work in progress, so to speak.

The Comet in January 2010, half a year after I bought it. Got finished in 2012.
The van in March 2016, roughly five years after I got it. Slow progress, the kids got in the way... Was finally done in 2018.

some great quivers throughout this thread. here are my two projects: 96 FZJ Land Cruiser (triple locked - IYKYK). just starting to get working on this one and learning the wonders of a straight axle & mountain goat qualities of this beast

                  IMG_5752.jpg

my 1986 VW Vanagon Syncro (2 knobs) (which I just sold to a friend w/first buyers rights when/if he should decide to sell it). This was my first foray into engines and transmissions. my background is chemistry so i really geeked out on learning the engineering/physics and chemistry of engines through this car. it was a great van for camping, ski trips and just rolling slow with a smile on your face.

Brilliant photos @Inorganic. I hadn't seen a Vanagon in years, and when we spent a week in Austin, TX late last month i saw like 6 of them. Find the hipsters, find the vanagons

So nice @Inorganic, drove one (not a syncro though) in the late 80s, and loved it. My parent had a T2 in the 70s in which we toured Southern Europe when I was a kid, and now I have a T5 California (IMO technically the best VW bus), but I love them all.

@jordanscollected oh these are definitely loved by hipsters, I'm guessing because they are so 'instagramable', which has driven the prices of these thru the roof.

@endo I've not seen a T5 in the US (I think they are euro spec only? perhaps because of emissions, plenty of T4's around). I watched a review of the California - looks pretty rad and, as expected, well thought out from a space usage/amenity perspective.

@Heavy_blue While the 67/68 Fastback is indeed a cool car, the 69 has grown on me over the years. If I had the chance, I'd take the 69 Sportsroof over the 68 Fastback. In the meantime, my 65 convertible will do 😁

@endo lovely photos! so great to see people using their vans to get out there and make memories. as for the engine placement - i kinda dig the engine in the rear. it saves/creates so much space, lowers the center of mass so you can take turns like you're in a sports car (albeit with 89 hp) and for rear wheel drives having that weight in the rear is great for driving in the snow! there are drawbacks for sure - the cooling lines have to be MASSIVE, thus, the volume of coolant is obscene (18 litres!!), i can be a bit noisy and create a lot of heat in the summer.
