          @Giles:

Even when most of the shelves are empty and people are panic-buying almost anything,  the veggie stuff can't even be got rid of when it's on clearance…. 😃 😃 😃

We use an organic veg box delivery who have implemented rationing from day 1 of Covid 19, we are veggie and buy organic anyway, and use local shops. My last 2 shopping trips this week have been just like normal. When everything else has been cleared from the shelves, I've been able to buy the organic version with ease.

There is also an economic reality. We live in a relatively middle class area now, and the panic buying phenomena experienced by some hasn't massively hit. The local co-op has rationed essentials to the elderly first, and then limited all items to 2 per person since day 1, as such they have new stock every day. We are fortunate.

My friend works in the local independent health store, and I visited her this morning. She said that her distributors are starting to feel the pressure as people venture in to her shop and change their shopping habits.

My wife showed me some hilarious preper website that usually espouse hunt and kill and eat. Some have had an epiphany and essentially said, when shit goes down, the vegans may actually have got it right. Nuts, beans and pulses pound for pound are a way better source of energy and vitamins.

I think the bigger picture here is that it's shocking how many people don't know how to cook from scratch. I know for most IH forum members that doesn't seem to be an issue, but millenials are fucked!

Myself (a millennial) and all of my peers who cook 2-3 times a day would beg to differ

I'm not sure not being able to cook is a fair generalization of millennials.

Many of them have been foodies for most of their lives. A lot of them learned to cook at an early age.

I feel like Gen X has more closed minded eaters that can't cook.

I'm not generalising. Health and social care research shows it as an issue. The more time rich you are, and disposable income you have, the more likely you are to cook for fun.

If you are time and cash poor, you are more likely to depend on quick and cheap ready meals.

This is something that fascinates me. A few weeks ago I asked about 8 colleagues at work whether they can cook (all aged from 21 to 30). Most laughed, and only one said she and her boyfriend cook. Others said they buy take out or convenience food.

I appreciate the way most of us buy food has changed, and people rely on convenience more, but there is a difference between choosing not to cook and not being able to cook.

To be fair, I’m still surprised when anyone is a closed minded eater or can’t cook, I’m just less surprised when it’s someone our age.

That’s funny, my buddy was talking about dusting off his home brewing system because of the shelter in place.

He said he would bring beer if I’d defend his house from looters.

I think covid19 is a timely wake up call for anyone that thinks it's acceptable to be incompetent at feeding/sheltering/defending their family.

If you look for "Basic Dude Stuff" on Youtube by Pat Mac it's a worthwhile way to spend a few minutes. I think he's got four of them, and he tries to be funny about it.

I don't have any desire to shoot people in the face, but I sure as shit have the ability and capacity to leave nothing but a smoldering crater if you try to take the food I've reserved for my granddaughter. I'll be damned if she misses a single meal because I wasn't capable.

And not talking shit like "I'll beat someone to death with a baseball bat" when they haven't even hit a baseball in 20 years, I mean they're going to need to repave the road outside by the time I'm satisfied.

The free market is a good thing imo and will respond accordingly.
