I have the IHJ-08 which is practically the same jacket so I can say that the insulated hood is pretty good. BUT, adding a hood and a liner and I cant imagine this thing being under a grand. For that much you might as well buy the big primaloft parka OR buy this and the IHJ-80.

Both the IHJ-75 (USD1100) and the IHJ-80 (USD 650) are heavier jackets than this jacket (USD 600). They're also made in a different style. Longer for example since they're parkas. You might say that adding a removable liner will increase the weight on the IHJ-79 as well - Yes but it'll be removable after all.

Even if so, the removable liner is just an idea - as in mathematics, not a necessary condition but rather a sufficient condition - to perfect the jacket even more. Customers of IH (want to) spend 1.5k on a leather shirt and I can see why as it is absolutely beautiful. When it comes down to it however, functional goes over beautiful and ideally, for IH, the existence of both would be the best. Therefore, paying 1k for a jacket that could meet all the expectations isn't the problem in my opinion - that is if the removable lining even costs that much to begin with. Would you rather for example pay USD 1000 for a smartphone that has the best hardware and software or pay USD 1000 for the smartphone with the best hardware and pay another USD 1000 for the one with the best software?

As for the removable/ hidden hoodie, I'd say it wouldn't add much to the price. The IHJ-08 sold for USD 500. Even if adding a removable/ hidden hoodie on the IHJ-79 cost USD 100 more, it'd be absolutely worth it and not much of a sacrifice to make. Someone willing to buy this kind of a jacket for USD 600 could pay USD 100 more for a more complete jacket with more functionality I'd say. That is, once again, if the additional hoodie even costs an additional USD 100. After all, the only "alternatives" to this jacket are the IHJ-75 (USD1100) and the IHJ-80 (USD 650) anyway…

The current state of this jacket is rather incomplete to me. It's on its way to be the lightest, most functional jacket but it's not there yet. Someone with a jacket like this would like to travel (light) and still be warm and dry. I'm assuming that's the point. The added hidden hoodie would only contribute to that idea in my opinion.

The IHJ-08 sold for $500 5-6 or so years ago. I very much doubt it could be produced for the same price now. Making a vest liner out of primaloft or thinsulate costs almost as much as another jacket.

Cost aside, I still think all this plussing defeats the original purpose of the coat which is a warm but lightweight layering piece.

The plussing is hidden or removable though. The hidden hoodie wouldn't affect the purpose of the jacket and neither would the removable lining. In fact, they'd contribute to the purpose of the jacket making it even more functional than it already is. By the way, the lining could be like a blanket lining to cut down the cost. It doesn't have to be primaloft or thinsulate.

Worst case, the hoodie and lining could be sold separately. That'd allow for the jacket to maintain the same price. Only difference would be that people that want the hoodie or lining could additionally purchase and upgrade their jackets if needed. Better to have more options than not. Especially when it's removable or hidden.

But @Giles, do you believe that would still be the case if more than just one jacket (or all) were produced with the same way of adding/ removing a lining? I think with the right pattern tweaking, that is possible to do. Because then you could produce a limited amount of linings a year, say 50 for example and people could upgrade any Iron Heart jacket they own with that lining.

Some people would probably buy even more than one just to have the convenience of not switching linings between jackets. Kind of like boxers: You can have just one and keep washing it everyday or own seven, one for each day.

Thanks for the recommendation. I checked it out shortly out of curiosity but I'm afraid it didn't catch my interest at all… I don't purchase anything besides Iron Heart products 99% of the time anyway

Can you tease us about what it’ll be? Tops/bottoms? Denim, hide or technical stuff?

This is my first IH ‘technical’ piece and it is outstanding in looks, material, comfort…haven’t tested it for warmth yet. This jacket is a serious threat to all my other jackets which go on bike rides.

It is such an easy item to stuff into a bag when not in use during a ride than any cotton or leather jacket.

I can give you my thoughts on it, if you like 🙂

I wouldn’t feel the need to wear anything over it. Over the weekend I was outside most of the day wearing a tshirt, moleskin(216) and this and I was very warm. I had it unzipped a big chunk of the day In roughly 25-30deg temps with some snow and wind.

Short story is that its real warm

With our very mild winters here, never freezes, I plan to use it with tshirts or a shirt underneath while riding a bike around town. Occasionally on colder places that are a day trip from home, I can see using a UHF or a thermal under it. That should suffice for my weather here.

How were you hoping to use it? Would you like to see a pic with something else under/over it? Let me know.
