A mixure of music and guilty pleasure.  🙂

Music moves us. But, not everybody started with something really cool. Still, these first experiences leave their traces. So, c'mon people, tell us about the first album you ever bought, got or stole.

I’ll start. It was the summer of 1977 and I was 8 years old. I wish I could say now comes a story about ‚Never mind the Bollocks‘ or ‚The Clash‘ which were both released that year, but no. We were living on the countryside in the North of then very sleepy West Germany. Absolutely no international influences, subculture or anything that was really cool. Just fields, forrest, lots of wild animals and so on, which was nice. The older brother of a friend had this poster in his room with four strange people in white dresses sitting in a transparent helicopter. Wow! He lent me his audio cassette and that hooked me. Since then my taste of music has changed, or should I say developed, but once in a while I’m still a dancing queen. And I got tickets for the new show in London, next year just before the meet-up in Gosport.

I may have the sequence mixed up but I got my first few things when they were on the charts.

I think the 45 for "Shout by Tears for Fears." Around the same time I also got the 45 for "One Night in Bangkok" by Murray Head.

"Business As Usual" by Men at Work is the first cassette I recall owning. I saw Colin Hay play in LA recently and he is fantastic. Regaled us with all kinds of stories and has a great sense of humor. And just he and his guitar can belt out some great tunes.

Run DMC "Raising Hell" and GnR "Appetite for Destruction" (which I had to hide) were other early acquisitions.

Formative albums from my dad's collection were Led Zeppelin "Houses of the Holy," Jimi Hendrix and Doors albums, and the Eagles' "The Long Run" and "Hotel California." My mom played a lot of Motown and Beatles.

                    Think it, be it.

@mclaincausey Oh man, I love 'One Night in Bangkok', what a great first buy. I also bought 'Appetite for Destruction' when it came out, with the first cover, but later sold it for that reason. I didn't like seeing that picture on it.

@LewisStonehouse 'Blood Sugar Sex Magic' is hot pepper!

My first "album" were two Depeche Mode mix tapes my cousin made for me.

Interesting side note: my first punk cassette tape was this gem.

This is such a great thread Endo!  I was really into the Beatles and Wings from my dad’s record collection in the 70’s. So the first album I picked up was Wings-Back to the Egg in 1979 when I was 8. It was…not a great Wings album.

Then I distinctly remember buying these 2 cassettes around 10…

                                    The Rolling Stones-Tattoo You

The latter resulted in an awkward exchange with my mom when I asked her what “Little T&A” meant.  Quarterflash was just bad 80’s music.

Wings at the Speed of Sound is also a huge one for me as a kid, but it belonged to my dad (I now have his copy on vinyl). I also had the Thriller 7" (and still do) but my parents picked that up for me earlier as a gift, for spinning on my Fisher Price player 😉
