Two OD’ed type III’s in different sizes, two IHSB-C3’s in different sizes, two IHV-29’s in different sizes. It is a totally legitimere move.

I’ll be picking up a khaki N-1 in L one day to go with my XL.

                    Hey all-

I'm sorta newish to the forum and I'm looking to grab an N1. From those in the know, how do these normally fit? Is it a slim fit? Or more boxy and loose?

When I look at the measurements, it looks like all the sizing went up by one size versus the shirt sizing. I imagine this is done to fit over a flannel or even a western shirt, but if I went down one size for the N1, would this be too restrictive?

For what it may help, I'm 6'3", 215lbs, and already have a few IH XXL flannels in the 23.5-24 p2p range. But what's messing with me right now is I recently got a Nine Lives flannel with a 23 p2p that actually feels sort of loose on me, so it got me wondering whether I slimmed down or the construction of the item is different enough where the measurements are a little off for different items I own.

Sorry for the long question/ramble, but any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I was wondering why the frisbee kept getting bigger and bigger, but then it hit me.

Good questions. A few words about sizing and measuring. Different brands and retailers measure differently. That may be the case vis-a-vis you me 9Lives shirt and your UHF’s. The only way to be sure is to learn one method and stick with it.

As you point out some shirts are cut differently. Wider shoulders and bigger armholes will affect the fit of the shirt over the chest. A good example of this is IH workshirts vs westerns. The work shirts generally have smaller shoulders which means you can be in need of a bigger chest for them to fit properly.

As for the N-1’s I think most people go with their shirt size for layering, but can go down for a snugger, more «tailored» fit. I have an XL N-1 and take XL in most shirts. I can get a henley and UHF or heavy vest under mine. Even a type III. I’m considering another for warmer days. Again, jackets aren’t shirts, and are cut differently so you have to start from scratch there.

So to answer your question, I think an XL would be good for you and the kind of fit you want.

I have the first release of the N1.  It’s the same size as my shirts and I have no problems layering , even with thicker things such as the melton wool shirt.  The cut is definitely not slim.

I haven’t kept up on how the cut of the N1 has varied over time except for noticing that some of them run short.  So keep an eye on the length, especially with you height.

I’m 5’10” and 170lbs. Average build. High street size medium. However, I wear a large in IH shirts and most jackets.

In the N1 deck jacket, I find the medium is perfect with just a t-shirt but too tight with anything beyond that.

Sadly, the large ended up being too big for me. It was comfy and allowed for layering but was too big and baggy even with a thick wool jumper underneath. Not to mention the sleeves were significantly too long in the size large.

So I personally think this jackets works best if you size down from your IH shirt size. It really depends what you intend to wear it with though.

Thanks for the feedback! I always have this thought of wanting a jacket to survive the apocalypse, but in truth, that isn't what I would need this to be used for 99% of the time. BTW, shout out to Norway! My family used to live on the island of Senja, in a tiny fishing village called Vangsvik.

Good call on length. Usually 27"+ works for me. I'm not usually bending over a lot, so I don't usually need too much back coverage.

My use case would mainly be in the teen to 50 degree Fahrenheit range, and I would not be static. So, I can't imagine needing to layer very much underneath.

I was toying with the idea of sizing down 2 more than my normal shirt size, but only because there are small variations in some of the sizing between the different jacket runs.

Yea, I can understand if someone lives in a place with "real" winter. I'm in California. There are spots where it will get cold, but I won't really need to use the jacket with layering 90%+ of the time. Especially since I run hot. But I definitely want something when I'm in the mountains in January-March.

Yup…. after five years in mine with a fair amount of rain and snow, I can confirm that it stands up to rain and snow very well without being technically water reistant/repellant.

I would definitely second this.  I wear mine a little large (XL in UHF’s, XL in N1), and am comfortable down to -20 Celsius when layering.

Great in snow and rain, although I’ve never worn it in torrential downpours.
