Well, tomorrow is when it all kicks off. Ingrid and I have been at the house today making plans for gutting it.

It is in a fairly shabby state, but that is fine as it is all going in a skip anyway…

Stage one will be totally renovating the top two floors. Floors and walls need levelling, floors and external walls will be insulated, the total electrical installation, new bathroom, changing the room plan and installing a new kitchen.

        Part of the living area

        A bit of kitchen

This is where the magic happens ( @Filthy )  [emoji23]

        Lovely bit of carpeting…

Stage two will be making the cold cellar livable. And dividing it into two bedrooms, a lounge and a toilet. We also need to cut new windows, sink the level of the floor by about 30cm and work everything up from the concrete. This part of the job is massive.

Stage three will be insulating the house externally, changing all the windows, re-doing the drainage and the weather boards.

        The exterior:

        A bit of a garden

Off to bed now. Tomorrow it is crowbars and sledgehammers galore.

Check the cellar in the above pics… I'm fairly sure bad things have happened there.

            @neph93:

the biggest boys will be 18 soon and start leaving the nest.

Are you sure about that ? Nowadays, most kids are staying into their 30's

            Yeah, that thought has occurred.

The oldest lad, Jesper, is 18 in a week and will be finished with high school in June. He is keen to do national service which lasts a year. He is also desperate to move out. No bad feeling, but he wants his independence.

The next chap, Noah is a year behind Jesper and will be leaving for university in the Fall of 2022.

We’ll just change the locks then.

Lotta potential there! Stoked to see how it goes. I need to do a lot of stuff to my house, so maybe this'll be a bit of motivation…

Are you sure that the previous owner wasn't Josef Fritzl's Norwegian cousin? 😃

I'm going to live my house renovation dreams vicariously through you @neph93. Unfortunately Australian property prices are on the lock them up in Broadmoor side of criminally insane, so it's not happening anytime soon. (For example,  a modest house in a good suburb of Sydney that's listed at $2.6 million.)

My daughter Sydney is here and saw that. She freaked out. I made up some macabre story about it being where they washed pigs heads and lamb corpses back in the day. She’s vegan [emoji23]

It is amazing. Been there since 1941. If we can figure out a way of getting it to Gosport…. ?

The house look like it's build of wood right? Ours too… many houses in Austria are build with wood nowadays again. Well as everyone in the world now knows, there are lots of trees in Austria  😃 😃 😃

When you come to the rewire, especially with there being a lot of timber in the construction, please consider Arc Fault Detection Device(s) in the Consumer Unit. In the latest wiring Regs in the UK, they are recommended  (not mandatory, yet) but are specifically designed to reduce the risk of fires caused by some electrical faults.
They are installed together with the usual MCBs/RCDs.

Basically they cut off a circuit if there is even minor arcing / sparking..

Funnily enough the electrician was in the house  disabling the leccy to the top floor when I read this. I asked him about it and he confirmed it is available in Norway and will be an option for us. Thanks for the tip.

The gutting of the top floor started yesterday. I had a crew consisting of Hot Ingrid, Jesper and my daughter Sydney (who has just moved to Norway from the UK with a view to staying). They worked like demons and we made a great start.

The construction of the place is insane. I didn’t realise the walls wouldn’t be framework. Instead they are solid, and made of beefy layers of 5x2 with some insulating and damp-proofing layers squeezed in between. We’ll be adding 5cm of insulation (Rockwool or the like) to each side of the wall. Here’s a cross section:

It was pretty great uncovering the layers of up to 80 year old wall paper:

We also found an old wasp/bee nest in a vent. Fascinating…

We hope to get onto the flooring today.
