I'm looking for a large, waterproof, and hard-core durable back pack. Anyone have any suggestions? My Timbuktu bag is over 10 years old and is still serviceable but I feel like I am ready for something else.

Question, does it have to be waterproof (i.e. is it likely to be submerged)?

If so, will have a think.  If memory serves aome of the bags from Finisterre got some positive feedback.

If not. The Mystery Ranch packs with the Futura yoke harness are without a shadow of a doubt the moat comfortable packs I have ever used.  Also, the functionality of the tri-zip is awesome.

Appreciate the military aesthetic of some of them may not be for everyone though!

It would not be submerged. But would sometimes be in the rain outside for 12 hours. It would also need to fot a 17 inch gaming laptop inside.

Would be worth considering a bag made from x-pac. It is basically waterproof and is also very light.

I have various x-pac pouches and a shoulder bag from Orbitgear in Jakarta.  The quality of their new stuff is exceptional for the price and had a quick look at their website and the backpack in the link below has weatherproof zips etc. but could not see size of laptop sleeve. Although it says out of stock, they do regular introduce stock and if is of interest you can sign up for a 10% discount (also, if you log in and browse items enough, they will send you a discount code).

Black Ember do some lovely looking waterproof packs. Most of them say that only hold 15” laptop, however, my understanding is that this one can hold a 17” laptop but would need to double check

Someone on there who's also all over sufu told me I'm wrong to rec the 634 as it's on the slim side of slim-straight. Is this the comment of some anti-fit fringe member or am I totally wrong? I've always seen the 634 as a straight leg cut, etc. Help me win this Internet commenting war guys.

I know exactly who you're talking about, haha. I'm with you on the 634. That particular person seems to only think Sugar Cane and TCB make straight leg cuts.

It's definitely a straight cut. Slim/straight cut. It says so in the product description.

I own several pairs of Sugar Cane "straight cut" jeans, and my pairs of IH-634S-GR are definitely more straight in comparison.

@Giles any chance of seeing the gray selvedge 21oz returning?

@Filthy if you're after a retro pack, Rivendell Mountain Works have several that are straight out of the seventies!

The Tom Bihn Guide's Pack, Shadow Guide 33 (the smaller 23 won't fit a big laptop), Guide's Edition Paragon, and Design Lab Edition Paragon all play around with more classic silhouettes. They'll fit a 16" or 17" laptop, though I'm not sure if the Guide's Pack includes a sleeve.

Trakke do some really nice backpacks. The Storr is a travel design, with a zip-open front.
