Truth be told, I was never a fan. They never really fit my musical tastes. It likely didn't help, they followed on the heels of another influential group from that era, that happened to be more to my liking. I always like the BoDeans; never liked the Violent Femmes, though. Blister In The Sun rivals Love Shack by the B-52s for title of the most irritating song of the 80s/90s.

My opinion was totally subjective, of course. I can understand being annoyed by Blister In The Sun. It's not for everyone. I can definitely understand being annoyed by Love Shack, because I am. But, if we're going to pick the most irritating song of that era, I beg to differ. The Proclaimers, I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) takes the cake.

I suspect Violent Femmes had a different cultural caché in the UK in 1989/90 compared to the USA. You were indie AF if you had their first album (which I did [emoji41]). The B52’s were cheesy by comparison.
