The corona virus is really pissing me off. Same with the hysteria in the media. I don’t recall people responding this way when the SARS or MERS virus were around.
Saw someone posted…I got over the Corona virus in the 90s when people started putting limes in their beer.  😃

It is pretty tiring. However this is a very different situation to SARS and MERS. They never made it out of their respective areas of origination while this has just gone global. Far more people have already died from COVID-n19 than those two put together. Neither SARS, nor MERS caused a global economic slowdown.  It will be a part of life (and the news cycle) for the entire planet for a long time to come.

Thanks for the suggestion but we're gonna stick with karate for the time being as my son seemed to like it. I'm also going to register him for the youth soccer league this summer so that he gets exercise and learns about teamwork.

          FOOTBALL get it right.. 😉

Actually, SARS and MERS did spread globally. I believe SARS spread to 29 countries and MERS spread to 27. SARS started in 2002, right before Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, so there weren't as many 'voices' talking about it. I do think that the rise of social media has amplified the news cycle 1000 fold so that everyone is being bombarded with this sort of stuff. I realize that the absence of social media likely wouldn't have mattered but I don't think it's helping either. But yes, the new coronoa virus will be with us a little longer but i'm sure it will all go away like the others did…eventually.

I know, right? I'll eventually get around to telling my boy that it's referred to as football in other countries but for now, I can't be bothered to discuss the etymology of the word to a soon-to-be 7 yo  😃

That is exactly it though, it almost certainly won’t. SARS was an epidemic with 8000 infections and 750 deaths. It spread, sure but was never a pandemic. It never went truly global and it was actually pretty hard to contract.

This is a pandemic in all but name and will surely be called that by the WHO within the month. There are over 80000 confirmed cases and over three thousand deaths with major outbreaks on two continents.

The mortality rate of the novel virus is much lower than SARS, but it is at least twenty times as deadly as influenza. SARS infection required pretty heavy exposure, but COVID-n19, apparently does not. The early evidence suggests it spreads with the same ease as a common cold. So comparing it to SARS is like comparing Levi’s and Iron Heart [emoji6]

The prognosis is that it will become endemic in two years, in the same way as influenza is, a part of the normal rounds of disease affecting the human race. That will be fine when we get a vaccine but until then it will kill a lot of people.

There is no doubt excessive social media and competitive news coverage creates unnecessary anxiety before people get tired. That is dangerous. The threat COVIDn-19 poses should not be over exaggerated, most people who get it will be just fine, but disregarding advice and taking it lightly will increase behaviour that enables the disease to spread even more easily. That makes a difference if you are elderly/senior or if you have a disease requiring you to take corticosteroids as they are the people it will kill if it comes to where you live.

There is good info out there that we need to take note of, but it gets drowned out by all the click bait coverage and by people talking out of their arses.

It would seem this is cleverer than most too. Makes SARS and MERS look pretty dumb in fact.

I just did a quick exchange rate check; 11k OMR is approximately 22k GBP. Does he want you to cover shipping to Oman?

Not surprised since Costco sells in bulk. I've stopped buying bottled water because of the environmental issues associated with micro plastics and only drink tap water.
