Loving the colours you are achieving @adam313 . Would be good to see 'stages' of this, to see the colours being laid down. Are you just layering pencil?

Thanks @Steve. All colored pencil. This is 850gsm cold pressed watercolor paper and each line that you see takes many minutes to complete with a considerable amount of hand force. Takes a loooong time to etch lines with a soft pencil.

        The first lines

@adam313 oh, I see, so you are 'engraving' into the paper, so to speak, and this then gives the texture as you push into the paper fibres?

Love the pic of all the worn down pencils!

@Steve essentially, yes. Etching, engraving, tattooing could all work in a pinch. But the problem is that this process is both additive and subtractive, and the texture evolves as well, with all the movements of my hand and rubbing of the lines (which itself is a laborious exercise), so it’s not easy to describe what is ultimately taking place on this sheet of paper. That’s why I like to refer to them as zen gardens, since the process is like raking sand with all the paper pulp, pencil dust and broken pieces of color that get accumulated.

One of these days maybe @Steve. I also have a load of broken leads I can do something with eventually. It’s nice that they can still be useful after they are no longer useful!

@Jett129 No. It just evolves until the paper can’t take any more. Each peace is essentially a conglomeration of multiple compositions, hopefully woven together through time into a unique and fascinating paradox of figure and ground. It’s not a good way to have an art career, but it produces some unique artifacts that I’m proud to have had the opportunity to create. Thanks for asking!
