@Mni I am generally a 36 waist. I've owned 634s in 36, but the hem was just a bit too wide in that large a waist size.

I've just ordered a 36 in 888s 21oz today, so fit pics to follow.

Pre soak. As I get older, the higher rise, looser general fit, and wider hem are a better option. The fit like the 55 Big E Levis I wore when I was in my early 20s (a couple of decades ago)…

I’ve said it before, the 888 is super flexible. Relaxed and vintage like you’re rocking, or with the high rise you can size down and go slim and modern.

I’m able to wear the 888 like others wear the 555 (which I can’t really touch as it is only ever going to be tight (like a tiger).

                    Congratulations, I’m pleased for you.

Hi, this is my first post on the forum. Recently bought my first pair of Iron Hearts, which is my first dive into Selvedge denim! After looking into everything I went with the 888s in 21oz. Love them so far, just still trying to decide if I want to keep the cuffs or hem more for the uncuffed look.

Look good cuffed to me. Really nice fit in general, relaxed without being sloppy. But it is personal preference. I suspect they’ll be too long to wear uncuffed, so the question is, will you be happy with them cuffed all the time?

Yeah, that’s what I’m trying to decide. I do like how it looks cuffed just not sure if I want that all the time. It would definitely be too long to go back and forth.

I agree that looks like a perfect length for those particular shoes, but they might also look really good uncuffed/with stacks with different footwear.

The cuffs look great to me ! I think you could also wear them uncuffed, with moderate stacking.

As I say, I think they look great as they are. If you want the best of both worlds then taking an inch off may enable you to go both cuffed and uncuffed, but the eventual expense and inconvenience that creates may not be worth it when they look as good as they do.

Id hem/taper until you can get a quarter break right above the tongues of your shoes.  This way u can single cuff with shoes and double cuff with ankle boots.

                                          @Anesthetist:

I’m telling you, I used to think that the 633 was my favorite but the rise and thigh of the 888 have me bowled over atm. I might need to get some 21oz 888 next.

I have to ask/address this statement, as I've seen it come up several times, both here and other places - where does/did the notion come from that the 888 has a larger thigh than the 634, and therefore the 633? I'm not going to dig for it too much, but in Giles' original announcement/description of the 888 was that is was based on the 634: "New jeans cut. Higher rise than IH-634 - particularly at the back. More taper from the knee than the 634." The first iteration had the same thigh measurements as the 634 in the same fabric. Shortly after the first release, some guys were asking/requesting a larger thigh for subsequent runs, but the response was that it was selling so well it wouldn't be changed. When I've compared the 634 to 888 measurements in the same fabric, the thigh is the same with an expected small amount of variation.

I get and acknowledge that each version in different fabrics will have slight variations in measurements. One of our fellas on SuFu had an OD 634 version that looked skin tight, like a 777.  He's a tall, lean, athletic guy with bigger thighs, but not a gigantic weight lifter build. They were too tight for him, and looking at the fit pics it was understandable. I think that was an extreme case of a 634 variat being unusually slim.

The 633 is SE's proprietary cut, and seems to be continually evolving with each release. Every variant that I have looked and compared seems to be a bit different from one to the next. But in general "taking their famed 634s and tapering the leg for a smaller leg opening and also lengthening the inseam by a few inches.", it still based on the 634.

Could it be that you're comparing a 633 variant that happened to have smaller thighs than a standard 634?

My point to all of this is that if the 888 is/was not intended to have bigger thighs than the 634, let's put that notion to rest once and for all.

edit: wow that was unintentionally long winded…  😶

I thought he was referring to the taper of the thigh compared to the 633. I realise it is a jump but that is what differentiates the thigh in my mind.

You’re right though, the original plan was for the 888 to have a thigh around about the 634, never wider. One of the early models came in slimmer, the cut took off sales wise and the rest is (fairly recent) history.

Interestingly, the IH-888-RE had considerably larger thighs (and didn’t sell that well), I wonder if it was closer to the originally intention, co-incidentally or otherwise?
