Quick question: is it extra hard to indigo-dye wool? I'm curious why we see so little indigo wool (I know Andersen-Andersen does it, but I haven't seen it elsewhere much)?

I’m speculating here, but wool has naturally occurring  water resistant properties and indigo is water soluble. Perhaps these two things present a challenge when dying? Cotton on the other hand sucks in water and doesn’t release it easily.

I'm all ears, and not very picky in this case. The more varied the better actually. I still have about a leg and a half of the hickory stripe, but will take whatever you'd part with. Just let me know what you'd need/want to make something happen.

Ah yo! …little help with sizing please?

IH sizes are perplexing to me because I never realized the sizing varied so much between shirts. I own a Ultra Heavy Flannel Medium and it fits me like it was tailored but, I recently ordered a chambray work shirt, expecting it to fit "slim" through the body, but it was loose on me thru the waist. The shoulders and arms fit fine but, the waist had a lot of extra material. Now, here's the perplexing part; when I compare the size chart measurements, the flannel states slightly larger measurements both for the chest and waist.

Can anyone recommend, from experience, what shirts fit most similar to the ultra heavy flannels?

Short of ordering several shirts, all in different sizing, and sending back the ones that don't fit, I'm not really sure how to order based upon the size charts which obviously have discrepancies.

                              Thanx!

For starters, you'll learn, over time that some shirts or jeans just won't work out for you when it comes to measurements. You should get a tape measure, watch the IH video on how to measure shirts, and then measure the shirt that you really like and use those numbers as a base line for knowing what will fit you the best. If you really like a shirt and one of the measurements is off,say sleeve length, you can always ask the IHUK crew to look for a shirt that might satisfy your measurement needs. Occasionally quite a few of us have just had to pass on an item because the measurements just weren't going to work out. Hope this helps.

Hey, I appreciate the input on the sizing. I assumed that the size charts were somewhat accurate and the sizing from shirt to shirt was consistent but, I can see now it's sort of hit or miss. Obviously, the best is to go somewhere to try the shirts on, I bought the flannel at Self Edge in SF but, they don't carry all styles.

I may give IH direct another shot at some point to see if I can nail something I like, thanks again!

I also find the size comparison feature to be a great help in seeing how a new shirt stacks up relative to a shirt or pair of jeans that you’re happy with the fit on.

Like @Jett129 said, ALL! of us have had to pass on amazing garments that did not have the ideal measurements.

If we’re going to consider variables as to why certain measurements could be off, let’s consider ALL the variables, just to be fair:

-thicknesses of fabrics: the UHF is thick to begin with and then brushed which adds bulk. It will feel smaller for the same dimensions. The chambray, by contrast is a lighter and thinner fabric, and is not brushed and likely feels larger for the same or similar outside measurements as the UHF.

-sample size of measurements: the crew only measures a few individual shirts and averages them. Not every shirt is exactly the same. However, the crew will also measure the specific shirt you buy before you buy it, so that should take care of that. But if you are comparing the sizing charts only, then those might not be the most precise for all shirts.

-person measuring, their personal precision and the measuring instrument of choice: For an example of the huge margin for error, take a few of your shirts and do the best you can to replicate the IH measuring method and then compare your measurements to the chart for that shirt, they might be off slightly, everyone is different and not programmable unfortunately.

-the Iron Heart measurement chart is probably the most accurate chart for most things (compared to other charts out there)

-is your UHF a workshirt or western?: the work shirt cut is MUCH more roomy through the midsection across all fabrics. I don’t own one so I can’t be specific, but I might even size down if I ever chose to buy one, which I won’t unless they have snaps. On the UHF being larger in both the chest and the waist, if it is a western, they have a distinct curve to them that makes them feel so tailored (at least on my mediums). It starts wide in the chest and then narrows through the midsection and has a slight flare towards the bottom, and maybe that is part of the reason for a larger discrepancy between the measurements on your two shirts

Nope, and any brand that uses people to make their stuff will have the same issue, it's just that we actually acknowledge it.

                                        1. Work out your ideal size by measuring something that fits you well as we do

@Merv  don’t worry too much, it isn’t as tricky as it seems at first, and it certainly gets easier with experience. There is a huge amount of data available both from IHUK and through this forum. It is just a case of  learning how to use it.

All of the above stands from @Jett129 , @adam313  and @Giles , but part of your specific challenge involves the difference between work shirts and westerns. They are different styles of shirt and are cut and constructed differently.

The limitation with measurements is that what happens between the measurements isn’t knowable, based on a chart. So a work shirt may have a smaller chest measurement than a western but still be cut so that it fits looser. Just not over that line from pit to pit. If you imagine the line between the chest, waist and opening you will get an idea of how the shirt is cut. But shoulders size, sleeve length etc all play a role. Some folks only wear one or the other, some folks size down on the work shirts, compared to westerns. It all depends on taste, body shape, and the individual shirt.

Most IH westerns are cut the same or similar. They follow the same pattern. So using your UHF to compare to other westerns is a fairly safe bet. But comparing work shirts to westerns is like comparing the proverbial apples and oranges.

If you have questions about a specific shirt feel free to check that thread, ask questions there or here.
