TL;DR – Should I go for a 36 waist in the 777-XHS, because that’s what I have (and really enjoy) in the 777S-21?
              —
Hi all, I’ve been hungrily reading up on this cut in this cloth.

After a couple of happy years with a pair of double indigo 666s, this summer I discovered that the 777 is actually ‘my fit’, and the 21oz is precisely what everyone ’round here, and further abroad, assure me it would be, i.e. wonderful (such drapes, so comfort).

However, like many who’ve trod this path before me, I’m still in thrall to the Cult of Heavy, and so am keen to try my hand (and test my legs) with the XHS, not least so I can start a rotation and help my denim last longer.

My question is this: given the differences between the 210z and the XHS, do I need to factor in different considerations when sizing?

I haven’t washed the 21oz yet, and the amount of stretch has mildly surprised me (I’m expecting any normal post-wash shrinkage to stretch back out)(or should I? I guess I’ll discover in due course).

And so in regard to the XHS, what are the ins and outs I should consider? Is it considered to be the standard ‘will shrink a bit, but will stretch back out where under pressure’?

Or is it more along the lines of ‘will shrink, and remain more or less shrunk’d’, so size up?

I’m also going in with my eyes open in regard to the ‘challenge’ of bending 25oz denim to my will – does the slim cut up the ante in this regard?!

I appreciate there’s an above average chance that this topic has been covered elsewhere (and how tedious seeing the same questions appear is), so I’ll be happy with simple answers.

              Cheers!

I go for the same actual waist size.

Any shrinkage caused by washing will stretch back out again.  Though you will get less stretch with the 25.

Slim cuts do up the ante in the 25, but we sell a load of 777-XHS, so it's possible to bend them to you will.

Brilliant, thanks, Giles, that was all the encouragement I needed, and I see there's three 36s left too, nice one!

In terms of breaking in the 25oz, are we talking mostly full range of mobility but with pinching here and there? Or 'I need a grabber to pick things up off the floor' territory?

It’s a different beast to the 21oz. Quite restrictive for the first few weeks. But well worth it in the long run.

As far as sizing, I agree with G that 36 should work. If in doubt, measure the waist on your IH-777S as they are now compare with the waists on the IH-777-XHS and add about  half an inch to that. If the two figures are in the same ballpark then you’re good.

I wash and dry mine regularly, and found that they shrank a little bit more in the length than I thought they would. They’re still fine, but I like a little more stacking. If you don’t plan on machine drying, then ignore this post.

Just got my IH-777-XHS on Friday and have been loving them. Thanks to Matt and Giles for helping me find a 32 with 32" waist and 11.7" thigh. Best fitting jeans I own. Been getting lots of admiring looks and my girlfriend loves these the best. The denim in my closet: Unbranded UB221 (30), Unbranded UB221 (30), Naked and Famous Elephant 4 (30), Naked and Famous Elephant 3 (30), Levi's 514 Japanese Selvedge (30), and APC New Standards (30) and I am 5'10", 150lbs in case anyone, like me, needs some reference points from other brands compared to the 777.

It will likely be made from the same batch of denim as the 777-XHS so the same applies. That is, if and when it is confirmed.

I am waiting for the 777XHS to come in, but paining over what size as I guess they'll go fast. 34 or 35? Currently wearing 555 01 in a 36 but a bit large on waist but doable. Also 555 01od in a 35 waist. Nice fit. Now the predicament…I now realise the 555 01 does stretch a fair way so do I bite the bullet and go 34 and go back on the 5:2 diet or play safe with 35? I reckon buy both and send the other back...Looking at measurement comparison the 777 has a gnats cock more room in the legs making me lean towards a 34 waist. *buries head in hands

@WeirdowithaBeardo the key question is thigh width. How do your 555-01 fit in the thigh?

The other thing to remember is that XHS is a very different beast to 21oz. It will shrink some before stretching a little. It is like me in the mornings, cranky, grumpy and stiff.

I’d imagine w35 would be good but I’d have to look at the dims to be sure. I’ll do that for you shortly.

Also, there is quite a lot of variance in sizing within tag-size with the XHS as it is such a bastard to sew, so we may be able to find a pair that suit you more than published…
