    @neph93:

    That is pretty great @Filthy  I miss having a dog to walk as it meant I saw them where I live a lot more often than I do now.

    that would be pretty amazing to be able to just walk outside and see something that beautiful every day.

      That's one reason I love living in Colorado. As long as I make it out of the house, chances are I'll see the front range and some cool stuff happening in the sky. If only I lived IN the mountains…

      As far as northern lights, I have only seen Aurora borealis one time from wilderness near Hastings, WI during a solar storm. It didn't have the curtain effect, but was more like a river of pulsing green charged particles flowing north to south. I also really want to see the effect at higher latitudes.

      Think it, be it.

        Agreed.  I wish the aurora borealis was more predictable. I've wanted to see the northern lights forever, and I'd totally plan a trip if I could be sure I'd see them.  Julie and I've been semi-joking about going to Iceland because every once in a while the plane tickets are mind bogglingly cheap. Maybe someday…

          My father-in-law is a retired police inspector and now drives busses for shits and giggles. He regularly drives groups of Japanese or American tourists out to a spot in the middle of nowhere with close to zero light pollution, in the middle of the night, to get a glimpse of the northern lights. They’re provided with appropriate clothing and some sustenance then sit their for two or three hours waiting to see something. He reckons one in five groups get to see the show.

            Somewhere in Scandinavia there's a hotel whose rooms are domes such that you can sleep under the aurora.

            Think it, be it.

                I wonder why that area of of Finland is called Lapland? Is that where they invented lap dances?

                  The Laps for which Lapland is named are really called the Samí. They’re an indigenous people whose traditional lands stretch from northern Russia through northern Finland and Sweden and into northern Norway. They have the same relationship to the reindeer as some Native American tribes have to the buffalo.

                    That's where Santa Claus lived before he emigrated to the North Pole, right?

                        Sorry, probably not funny. But every time I  hear about that area and reindeer and stuff. I think about mushroom shamanism and flying reindeer and stuff.

                          Exactly.  I'm not loving the idea of a trip like that for a 20% chance.  Now if I could hang out with some lap dancing Laplanders and maybe see Santa Claus, that would be different.
