A band I was in used to rehearse at Back Street Studios in Holloway, North London. Once in a while, for reasons that remain unknown to me, the Buzzcocks would hire one of the rehearsal studios to practice. Every ot he band rehearsing would just stand in the corridor and listen. That was the late 1990s. They were really sweet guys.

The Sex Pistols and the Clash get all the mainstream credit, but Buzzcocks and Stiff Little Fingers have inspired a fleet of bands.

If you are going to shamelessly ripoff other bands do it well, and they do it well! I truly expected them to be Japanese!

So HMV has been bought out by a Canadian record label. They hope to focus more on vinyl…yes!..
They have immediately closed 27 stores including 3 of my more local stores...bollocks.

I have a couple of Indies a short drive away, but please, businesses  stop driving EVERYTHING online!!! Music is the food of the soul for me, and online is just a music fast food joint, and a good music store is fine dining. I don't want fries with everything!!

Friday nights are reserved for only the greatest tracks. The problem with this one is that it's so good where do you go next?

              Right here?

I will concur that a great record store is an awesome thing.  Selectadisc in Soho (UK) was my favourite back in the day.  First heard Godspeed You! Black Emperor there and got majorly into the Constellation Records Montreal spacerocky kinda scene as a result.

That said… I think the ol' interwebs at least matches a fine record store in its potential for delivering all kinds of interesting stuff to be dug up.  I've discovered all sorts of cool music online, including stuff which may never have even ended up on a record back in the day. I get a little misty-eyed remembering Selectadisc, but in terms of musical freedom and availability the net really is quite remarkable.

@nurunuru I understand the dilemma, but a physical record store will always hands down be better in my opinion. I have found more music by stumbling across it by accident, speaking to other music fans, or over hearing a record being played than I have on line.

Algorythms dictate everything online. They exclude more choice than they include because they are depended on as a commercial tool (read interviews with any of the originators of the big social media companies).

I liked Selectadisc too (I wonder where Duncan is now?), Rough Trade when it was below Slam City Skates, Rhythm Records in Camden, Tower Records in it's heyday. Give me those back and you could keep the internet.

I've been really digging Greta Van Fleet ever since I heard them a couple of weeks ago. They're a revival rock band that have a lot of potential (but are already great!). I love their current work, but I can't wait to see what they come up with over the next several years. They're clearly heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin and Rush.

If they didn’t play their own songs they’d be a Led Zeppelin tribute band, don’t understand The Rush connection at all. Been on to them since they first came out. Three brothers, not the drummer, who hail from somewhere in Michigan. I too like their music,as I’m desperate for any new guitar based rock n roll. Last year Elton John requested that they play at his Oscars party, after which he suggested they should dress more flamboyantly. Saw them recently on SNL and was horrified, but still liked them. Robert Plant has given them his blessings, and Slash has called them the most important new band. Hope they can sustain it.

@seawolf and @Jett129 pretty good, if you dig bands that pay a debt of duty to Zep however  check out Scorpion Child. Blatant, but a very talented band in their own right

If you don't see a connection Rush here, I don't know what to tell ya. When I first heard this, my first thought was how much it reminded me of the whimsy of Rush.

I was going by song arrangement and style, and didn’t get the technical complexity of a Rush song. I only saw Rush once and was kind of a casual fan. Not sure what you mean by the whimsy of Rush.

If you dive into their music a little, you'll find a lot of themes of fantasy and sci-fi. They're very technical and I would even consider some of their members to be virtuosos, but they also have a certain whimsical storytelling style that one can lost in. 2112, Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres are three albums that cross into that territory.

I'm also a drummer. Well, I used to be. I still have my kit, but haven't touched it in about 5 years because my apartment is too small. You're correct, Peart wrote most of their lyrics, and it's hard to not focus on what he's doing.
