I think it's important to point out that there's a distinction between being alone and being lonely. Everyone needs their alone time and there is nothing wrong with that as long as you are happy and it doesn't reach the point of loneliness. For me it's about having a balance like almost everything else in life. Sometimes I hate people and just want my alone time, other times I need my healthy doses of social interaction.
I do believe that feeling lonely and isolated can definitely impact your mental and physical health though. The argument that keeping prison inmates in solitary confinement for extended periods of time is inhumane and can have a negative impact on ones mental and physical health has been backed up by studies on animals and humans.
In one of the few (if not the only) studies on solitary confinement where human subjects were used not not one of the subjects lasted longer than seven days before they had to stop.To put it simply, it quite literally can make you "crazy".

The video doesn't show but I can attest that since I started to work alone:
- my blood pressure is finally down to a normal level
- I've stopped grinding my teeth when I sleep
- my overall mood has improved
- my kitchen appliances have remained dent free
So whatever Dr. Murthy had to say, I'm pretty much going to ignore it.
I don't work alone, but I do for the first time work remotely. I was worried about the transition, but in the end working from home is awesome. The dog time alone is good for my mental health. I have not yet stopped grinding my damn teeth though. I'm prepared for a lecture and an attempted sale of a $1k dental guard this afternoon at the dentist.
1000 USD for a dental guard ??? Made of Gold? @Seul:
Tell the dentist to piss off.

My feelings exactly. I think, too, that one's upbringing and life experiences can determine how we interact socially. I grew up around a bunch of a-holes, so i'm perfectly content being alone. The only person I spend time with is my son, but as he gets older he'll have his own life, and i'm fine with that too. It's funny because my son is an extrovert, a trait he gets from his mom. He thrives on socialising with other kids and he's very outgoing, whereas, i'm an introvert and am usually the quiet one in the room.

Academy or any sports store. Football mouth guard. ~$12. Chop the end that goes to face mask off or get one w out that piece. Been using them for grinding teeth ~30 years. May take you a few “styles” to figure out which one you cant chomp through.

Thanks, I thought about that–there is also an over-the-counter variant called Dentek.
Guess I should do something before my teeth are dust.

I've spent much of my working life in a crane cab, I like it.

That's how I chipped a couple of teeth, myself.
I've used both the football style mouth guards and the ones sold in the dental section of the grocery store. I like these somewhat minimalist ones.
The $400 custom one from the dentist made my mouth hurt. Of course.

Would someone that lives in the UK be able to buy this for me from eBay (for my nephew) ? I can send money via PayPal beforehand. You can let me know what you want for shipping. It costs 15 pounds.
For whatever reason the seller refuses any communication or shipping to the USA.

If youre in San Diego tomorrow I'm having a holiday party. Mostly coworkers. Funny as I got old that's who I socialize with. Nothing too special. Just brews and foods. (if you arrive early enough)
Expecting nothing but appreciate anyone who shows up. Anyways DM for more info!!! Would be nice to meet another IH member. I love kids, none of my own but maybe not the best party for them.

Apparently my 5 yo has a “girlfriend.” It’s a classmate of his and according to him she declared this to him today and kissed him on the playground. It may sound cute and innocent but I told him it’s the school’s rule not to engage in inappropriate behavior, such as kissing. I also told him not to do it again. The last thing I need is this girl’s parents getting on my case about it. My boy was embarrassed to tell me but he said he was surprised that it happened [emoji15]
