Yeah can't say I agree with Zepellin being the greatest rhythm section in rock at all.  Also depends on what your definition of "rock" is because if you're including metal (which I'm assuming we aren't but you never know) then saying Zepellin is at the top of the list is completely absurd.

holy shit I can't imagine why anyone would rather listen to Nirvana than Cinderella or Ratt.

Now this is a solid unpopular opinion.
I disagree.  Nirvana is much more enjoyable than Cinderella.  I kinda liked Ratt, though.

Also solid.  Peppers are great when Keidis accepts that he can't sing.

Just to clarify I'm referring strictly to the technical abilities of the rhythm sections of said bands, not the entire bands themselves, although I do still like the Chili Peppers better than Zeppelin as a whole but I do also admit Anthony doesn't have a great voice as @Chris mentioned.

I totally agree that "knowing all the notes" does not make a rhythm section or a band great.  I've never been a huge fan of prog rock or a guy like Yngwie Malmsteen because I am like you, I'm way more into a band that can write good music at the end of the day.  Songwriting is a much more difficult art than learning how to shred and be technically proficient IMO.

That being said, when you make a statement like Zepellin has the greatest rhythm section in rock and roll…well that is such a broad statement to make and we then almost have to make it based on a combination of technical ability and songwriting.  If we are to just base it on whether we like the music or not then it's purely based on personal taste and a matter of opinion.  I can play  Zeppelin songs in my sleep (guitar), same can be said for AC/DC or hell... Nirvana for that matter.  Not difficult to play but again, not saying they don't write great songs.  But if we are including metal into this then it's not even a contest.  I can go down the list...Metallica, Slipknot, Pantera, Slayer, etc...all have insanely tight rhythm sections with technical ability on an extremely high level and they write good songs to boot.  Personal taste aside, Zepellin doesn't touch them.

I played drums my entire life, and for me it’s all about the groove, the X factor that makes you tap your foot when you here a song. All the great bands have to have a minimum level in competency at bass and drums for whatever it is they’re doing to work. I can’t think of any successful band that had a crappy rhythm section. Even The Ramones who weren’t great musicians had a great rhythm section for what they wanted to do. If you have a chance go to YouTube and watch a live video of Zeppelin doing The Ocean.

Trust in the pros to come up with the goods. Well said @Jett129. Math drumming can be interesting, ridiculous levels of precision and complexity can be awe inspiring, but the key to great music lies in the ability of the drummer and bassist to make the whole thing excite you somewhere other than your brain or your ear.

                          • While Physical Graffiti is flawed, any song on it is better than anything ever made by a rock band in the 90's.

QFT. The beef between Keidis and Mike Patton of Faith No More is hilarious. I rank Mike Patton highly when it comes to vocal range and creativity, so seeing youtube videos of him talking shit about Keidis fills me with joy. I think the short answer went something like this: Keidis thought Patton was copying his style (or some such thing) and had Patton's band, Mr. Bungle, kicked off their European tour. There's a funny youtube vid of Mr Bungle clowning the RHCP's by doing a cover of one of their songs and dressing up like them.

Third. Rock and roll didn’t begin until 1977 as far as I’m concerned.
