About twice a week for the last week I've had friends/neighbors/coworkers ask me if they could come to my house if a massive hurricane like Irma hit us. The conversation usually goes like this:

"Can I bring my family to your house if a monster storm hits us? I know you have all that emergency food and water"
"You can buy all that stuff for just a couple hundred dollars"
                      "You have a generator"
"You can get one of those for a couple hundred dollars"
"You have all that emergency medical equipment"
"You can have that for a hundred dollars"
                      "But you have it already"

Then I have to be the bad guy when I explain that there is a finite amount of emergency supplies, and I'll let their family die in the streets before my family misses a meal. I don't understand why people have a problem taking responsibility for their own well being.

I'm not going to care about your family more than you do.

I know violence is not the answer, I got it wrong on purpose

@DougNg maybe those people don't have that kind of disposable income to spare??  It may seem like just a couple hundred bucks to you but to others it may be tough to come up with.

I would imagine this is not really the case if they are his neighbors.  Either that or they are living way beyond their means.  This also assumes the same folks don't have a credit card.  Purchasing less than $1,000 in emergency equipment days prior to a massive hurricane seems like a justifiable expense to go into debt for.

They have money, they just put it into cars, clothes, vacations, etc.

Additionally, the idea that you would use disposable income for emergency supplies is the problem. This is life saving/preserving equipment for your family. It should take top priority, especially when hurricanes are a known threat.

Also, I've accumulated this stuff over years. There is nothing stopping these folks from getting three tins of freeze dried food (enough for one person for 30 days) for less than $60 bucks. Do that again next pay day. Irma isn't hitting Maryland this week, budget accordingly.

I'm a little surprised that your neighbors don't prepare for these things. On the one hand, I can certainly sympathize with families that are in need of help during a weather emergency. At the same time, if you live in an area that is prone to such regular occurences then the question is, why aren't you taking steps to ensure your own survival?

With that said, I grew up in Japan where typhoons and earthquakes were a part of everyday life. But, I also lived on military bases so I think that's a little different than living in the civilian world when it comes to preparedness. My mom lives like 10 minutes from the ocean up in northern Japan and I keep telling her to move further inland or up in the mountains in case a big ass tsunami hits. She refuses to do so for whatever reason.

Really starting to dislike Southwest Airlines.  Just got a text that my flight to Orlando is delayed an hour and a half.  If they delay it again, I'm in real danger of missing my flight to London.  This is the second time SWA has dropped a major flight delay on me in the last 6 weeks.  The previous time resulted in my needing to sprint through the Memphis airport to catch the last flight of the day to Charlotte.  Missing it would have meant I wouldn't be able to make it to my grandmother's funeral.  I'm still a little touchy about that one.  If they screw me out of Kanreki weekend, I will be angry.
