what do you guys think gonna get me the best bang for the buck (price limit is sth. around 3k) and where do you guys think is the best and safest way to buy 2nd hand watches in that price range?

I was going to throw the new Omega Railmaster out as another option, but according to Hodinkee it's going to be $4,900. However, it's got a completely anti-magnetic movement, and the brushed steel dial looks great.

NOMOS Glashütte do some really nice watches. Something like the Club Neomatik, which has their new, in-house movement would come in under your budget. And it's available with a bright red face.

A vintage Omega Mark XI watch would be a vintage option. They're rarer than the better known IWC, cheaper, and, at 38 mm, slightly bigger. Watches of Knightsbridge often have them in their auctions. There were two in the last sale, one sold for £5,200 with the rare, original "thin arrow" dial, the other went for £2,400. (The thin arrow means that the dial wasn't upgraded in the 1950s to a non-radioactive paint. Collectors like that.)

The photo is from Hodinkee's preview, and I think that it's possibly standard fitment.

Monochrome Watches' preview has a photo on a herringbone strap, which is pretty tasty.

I agree that the new Railmaster is a lovely watch. I'm tempted myself.

i understand the history of omega and the railmaster. but it does remind me of a 6694 rolex. and i'd love to have one of those instead..

For such a heavy watch it is well balanced on the wrist. I love the Kawasaki green font on the dial.

The Rolex 6694 is a cheaper than the new Railmaster, and significantly less than the 1950s models!

Actually, the Omega RAF watch is a real bargain. It's basically the same watch as the Railmaster, but for a fraction of the price.

The modern, non-limited Railmaster is CHF 4,500 according to Monochrome, which is about the same in US Dollars. The limited edition "Trilogy" model is CHF 6,300, again from Monochrome.

The vintage pieces on Chrono24 start at somewhere around $15,000.

I agree with @Snowy here. I really like what Tudor is doing, but their watches don't feel as well made as a Rolex.

But I'd suggest going down to a local watch dealer (or ten), and seeing what you like. I find most Rolex watches a bit boring, except for the new Air King. I'd rather buy something that I want, rather than choosing a piece based on resale value.

I'm the same. I buy it because I love it. If it increases in value that is just a bonus.

still figuring it out...the more i look at the rolex watches, the more they grow on me and the more i like them...damn ^^

thanks again for the honest words guys...you're totally right. go with what you like/love instead of buying something just because the resell price is gonna be insane. cuz if you do, you (normally) don't care about reselling 😉
