Marvel is one thing, which might be cause for some minor concern. To me the greater threat is that they're tied in with Disney, who are pretty well known for being lawsuit prone in this area

Well, but Disney only has jurisdiction in the films, right? Or the whole kit and caboodle? If the concern is who used/copyrighted the name first, I was just assuming the only appearance of this character would thus far be only in the comics. Although the whole thing is moot if Works, inc never trademarked the iron heart name.

Marvel first introduced an 'Ironheart' character in a support role in October 2000…

It is possible that the character name was copyrighted then.

I have a friend who works for Marvel.  His take:

                Don't worry:

                1. Iron Heart came first
                2. Iron Heart is NOT Ironheart
                3. Iron Heart is NOT a superhero
                4. Marvel knows Iron Heart, I believe! In fact they choose to call Riri Williams "Ironheart" in a single word…
                5. Registered Marvel main characters are about 4500 and every day new ones are added. They cannot claim rights on every word in the vocabulary!
                6. I don't think Marvel will pursue in U.S.A. ...

Maybe Marvel and Iron Heart can collaborate? For example Ironheart will be wearing Iron Heart in her leisure time and the readers will find out these jeans really do exist. And are bulletproof as well.

My (admittedly limited) understanding of copyright law and trademarking is mostly connected to the media/entertainment industry and issues of intellectual property, but it leads me to believe that this difference in itself is enough to render possible litigation from either party pointless.

Actually one of the better written and researched articles I've read on the subject from a mainstream media outlet. I remember one The Guardian did a couple of years ago that made me cringe. They basically just re-hashed some of Nudie and Levi's no wash marketing twaddle.
