Scott Fitzgerald
I like people and I like them to like me, but I wear my heart where God put it, on the inside.

Because of America's interminable election season, My wife and I have been discussing what we think the future will bring, both in the next few years and further down the line. That has reminded me of a classic quote from John Maynard Keynes-
"But this long run is a misleading guide to current affairs. In the long run we are all dead." -
Ouch. Made me laugh though. As a multilingual U.S. citizen who travels around the world most of the year, I have come to understand the view many have of people from the U.S. being ignorant and uncultured. It is in some ways a deserved reputation. I think the current election says a great deal, no matter which candidate you support. I have also been amazed to witness some of the most condescending, dismissive and arrogant assumptions made by my friends (particularly by my European friends). The bottom line is that in every country I have visited, there are some beautiful and praiseworthy aspects, and some that are backward and disturbing. The U.S. is no exception, with many things to be proud of–Martin Luther King Jr., Faulkner, Emily Dickinson, Thomas Pynchon, Toni Morrison, Tom Waits, The Blues, Jazz, Hip Hop, AND the blue jeans we all love, and on and on--and many to be upset about. While it is easy to poke fun, and I often despair at the state of my country, there is plenty of goodness and brilliance still here, just as there is all over the world. Rant over.
