Do people actually like drinking from diner mugs? I think they look really cool, but I'd rather just look at them..

Yes. And the fact that most of the really top end coffee shops use them as well points to the quality of the vessel. Like the right wine glass brings out the best tastes, dinner mugs are similar for coffee..

I know and understand the science behind the correct wine + wine glass, and beer + beer glass for that matter. Although I really can't stand big wine glasses, even if they're "correct". What's the deal with the diner mugs? Honest question. You don't see them here in Sweden at all, and we drink shitloads of coffee. Never seen them for tastings either. To me they're just way too bulky. They look really cool though!

I'm not really sure if they make coffee better like wine glasses, they just seem to taste better to me, probably similar to the the right wine glasses. It could be the ceramic keeping the coffee cooling at a better/correct rate, the thickness of the mug wall allowing the pallet to open up correctly for coffee. The handles are spot on, have a great heft, hold a great amount of coffee, and are fairly indestructible too. Bit of history on them @ http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au/entry/the-humble-victor-diner-mug-an-icon-of-americana_55f875c9e4b0e333e54b86c4?section=australia

It lacks the over engineered and perfection of a diner mug. I'd buy either, but I wouldn't use a Fire King MIJ, they're WAY too small. (I do collect a bit of Fire King tho ::) )

I think a really hefty diner mug would be a better fit for Iron Heart. There was an article that I read not long ago about a scientist who studies the influence that packaging or appearance can have on our enjoyment of food. It mentioned a study that showed people thought the flavor of coffee was better, stronger, and more robust out of a white mug vs. a clear glass one.

That's really interesting, but the perception effect probably explains why people insist drinking coffee out of their favorite mugs. I've witnessed household and workplace meltdowns over mug misappropriation.

The "diner mug" has definite nostalgic appeal for me. Growing up on suburban Long Island (NY), I spent a lot of time at diners. Breakfast with the family, late night with friends (especially after over-indulging at the bar), or anytime you were with a group who couldn't decide on what to eat.  Regardless of the specific diner, the "diner mug" was a constant.
