      Long time no post 🙂

Just got back from Japan on sunday (spent 2 weeks in Kyoto) and after seeing all those beautiful japanese leather wallets in shops inspired me to finally get my shit together and make that new wallet I've been thinking about for quite some time now. A few years since I last made anything but yup, I've still got it. Not perfect by any means but good enough. Actually this was the first time I've done anything without straight lines so couldn't use a ruler for cutting and had to punch each hole separately with free hand spacing so stitching isn't perfect but I'm very happy with the end result. Made a belt as warm-up too but no pics of that since it was a straight forward boring 20 minute job.

      Veteran and replacement.

I wanted something thinner and with cleaner/simpler lines than the old one with capacity for loads of cards (each slot takes three cards) and bill/receipt/etc pockets. No need for a coin pocket and the zipper of it in the old wallet wreaked havoc on my cards. Had to fit in the back pocket too so no long wallets even though that would have been better regarding card placement (horizontally vs vertically) and access to bill pockets. Can't have everything I guess 🙂 Bought the leathers from Tokyu Hands on a last minute shopping spree and I'm happy I did. Took me about six hours to make (of which most was during a "can't-sleep-jetlag-night").

      AIAN HA-TO!

Carnage! Might not look like much, but a tremendous amount goes into it, and out of it as it were.

And the pencils start out like this and then get worn down to that

great shit Jii and Adam… would be interesting to know how much $$$ a month you're spending on those pencils and how much a single pencil is? 🙂 asking just to get a hold off it, nothing less. @adam313

Great question, @Finn666, I'm happy to provide more detail, thanks for asking!  The short answer is that I'm spending way way way too much money on my materials, papers, pencils, pastels, blenders, sharpeners (I will never tell what sharpener I use because they are discontinued and I have been hoarding them for years  ;D) and varnishes.  It's all money out of pocket, but I do it for the love of the handmade and unique.  I just want to make things I think are useful.  So I work clever odd jobs to keep me alive barely.  Starving artists are real!  Per month, it's probably half my rent, ~500, if I went full on artist-mode doing it all day everyday, it would easily be around $1000+/month.

Primarily, I use two types of colored pencils. There are exceptions, but the two I use are the Faber-Castell Polychromos, and the Caran d'Ache Luminance 6901. These two are by far the highest quality lightfast color available. The Polychromos are my workhorses at $1.75-2.50/pencil depending on if I buy In bulk or locally, and the 6901's are my finishers at $3.80-4.50/pencil.  The amount of pencils I have been going through lately is staggering, but that's a good thing!! 😉

Here's a pic of just the pencils I've completely worn down over the last two months. These are all now too small to fit into my manual sharpener.  The colorful ones are the Faber-Castell, and the ones with the cedar wood are the Caran d'Ache.  I included a full size pencil for reference.
