      G. What type of carb is on the bike? Not an expert myself, but my brother is a bike-nut  & could ask him for advice if you want.

          It's a Mikuni Carb but i'm not sure of the model exactly. @No.88
          It's the standard for the SR500 i believe. I think i'm going to take @harley dave 's advise and clean the jets. From all the research i've done that seems to be the most likely culprit.

          Any more advise is always welcome though!

            @Sam.

            Just got a reply from my brother. (He's heavily into restoring old bikes). He also suggested first removing the carb and cleaning completely, & make sure the float is good.

            He also suggests making sure the fuel is clean. (Possible debris in the tank?). Flow the fuel through some paper towel and see if it catches anything.

            He also might think it could be the pilot system or slide valve in the carb, as the bike starts but then cuts out at low revs.

            Is this an old bike, or is it being re-built?

              Found a 1977 CB550 fully restored in my next of the woods state side. Really a good looking bike seems to be gone through and not hacked up. Pretty original besides drag bars and no mirrors.

                                i am back just looking to see if i have any spare time at the weekends between now and when i go to japan .
                                i probably wont be able to do much more than you other than strip the carb ,good clean with carb cleaner ,clean out the jets (not with wire !!!) .
                                and generally have a good look round .
                                if its started before and run even for a short time it does sound like a carb/fuelling issue .
                                i will check to see if i can get down ,…............dave

                                            Autumn family ride last weekend. It was too long I had ridden The Injun, was a blast to cruise twisting countryroads with it.
