searching for a pair of nice dress shoes for the office…should be worn under a black suit (white shirt + tie or bow tie).
you guys have any recommendations to share? (size US9 in Alden btw.)

Personally I think nothing can beat these to be worn with an evening suit.  You can get the lined versions from Alden, but I love the unlined version even more…..I have had both the brown and the black versions and worn them both into the ground...

Obviously if you are prepared to spend on dress shoes then the sky is the limit. If, like me, most of your clothing budget goes towards casual pieces but you still want to look good for the office, then I can recommend Loake's 1880 range. Made in England, quality materials, reasonable price. I've been impressed with my Buckingham shoes since I bought them in autumn 2012.

For comparison, I take a 9 in the Loake and an 8.5 in Viberg (2045 last) and Alden (Trubalance last).

Loake 1880 is a good rec.

Allen Edmonds makes good stuff at a good price, but can be hard to find outside of the US.

Alden 975 is always a classic and works casual to suit.

Carmina also makes beautiful shoes, which I find even higher quality than Alden.  But both are great obviously.

I have a pair of Tricker's that I got from their ebay account.  They sporadically sell seconds and random samples and returns, so if time is a factor, that might not help.  But if you're not in a hurry, you can find some solid deals on very nice shoes.

That is not a classic look with Evening Dress.  A classic look for evening dress is a pump, that is why I recommended a slip on, can be worn both with evening dress and with a business/lounge suit….

I think derbies, brogues, or oxfords are the way to go if you're trying to be fairly formal. That said, I generally go the route of slip-one, though not loafers, with suits.

I always thought slip ons were a no no for suits ?  Outside of opera pumps for black tie that is.  Ugh, I can't keep my old timey rules straight!

What about a nice alden cap toe balmoral?

Yep @tigerpac that is the convention–however, I think slip-ons can look fine with the right last, and generally when I'm in suits I'm traveling, so I go for things which can be rapidly removed and put back on through airport security. I have some Maglis that are basically featureless (no tassels, penny holder, etc) aside from a simple strap and have a last that is more reminiscent of what you pictured than a loafer, and to me they are perfectly appropriate for a suit, even by conventional sartorial standards (which I admittedly often ignore).

I think those Alden Blutcher are a shade too chunky to fit with a suit (am I right in thinking you want these for office use as well as black tie?). As I said before, look into Loake 1880. The Aldwych shoe is a plain toe with no broguing and looks elegant enough to pair with a variety of formal options.

And for the love of God, do not wear brown shoes with a business suit!

You can wear brown or burgundy shoes with a suit as long as it is the right color suit.

I really hate the look. To my eye, black is always a better colour for footwear whether your suit is navy, dark grey or a lighter grey.
