Dry crocking (is that the right word?) is what happens, find nizzle's pair and look around the combs, see if that is what you want to happen to your jeans.

@fanya okay, maybe I will soak them. Thanks for the advice.

Edit: I gave them a gentle 30 minute soak.

Just soaking did not really work for me.  Did the second soak 120 something days in. I think my cracks at the combs probably are a result of me not agitating them  enough during soaks. I have soaked them 6 times & done two wash at 30 degrees.
Tightness of the jeans might also matter.  I do not really know.
Will try a different approach on my next pair.

              No worries @FilthyBloodJunkie  🙂

The old pair look like they're pretty awesome so be sure to share the love between them both.

                @nizzel55 & others?

I think part of it is how long you waited between your intial and second soak.  Denim needs to see water in my opinion.

I've done nothing but soaks on my 25oz MBBs and only have one tiny area in the stacks that have that, they had an initial soak, and then were worn for 6 weeks then soaked every week or two after that.  My other pair had an initial soak and then waited 130 days before their next soak and they have quite a bit of it, not as much as yours but still more than my MBBs, my jeans also aren't as tight as yours.

I think it is a factor of length of time without water (especially in the beginning with how stiff this IH fabric is) and tightness of the jeans on the body and how severe the stress points are.  I feel I don't see this on jeans that get frequent washing and on lighter weight denim that doesn't have the crease points.  I mean my first pair has a hole in the one side just from walking where the other side swished against it…  My personal opinion doesn't really mean  shit but I wouldn't go more than a couple weeks of wear without a good soak (not a machine wash) especially if you wear your denim on the tighter side.

Thanks for the advice everybody. I gave in to paranoia yesterday and went for a hotter and longer soak on the bottom portion. The part that would be prone to cracking and blow outs. Also, to shrink the leg openings a little. It worked because the legs shrunk a full half inch.

I guess with this pair, I am going to avoid machine washes altogether. Only soaking with little agitation. At least for the first year or so. I washed my last pair after 5 months of constant wear, and was slightly disappointed in how the comb creases stayed on the one leg and on the other leg never really stayed in the same place.

I have only been into Japanese denim for a little over 2 years now. So I am still trying to get the perfect: size, cut, washing regimen, and so on.

Honestly just wear them and wash when they're dirty. Don't worry about it. And if they are too tight to wash and wear get the next size up. It took me a couple years to come to that obvious conclusion.

Hi, forum folk…I'm considering these as my next IH jeans and here come the predictable fit questions: I notice the waist size is considerably smaller than tagsize.. is this a result of the higher rise, ie. that the jeans sit at a thinner section of the waist? My natural waist is 35" and I vary between tagsize 34 and 36 depending on stretch and fit. Also, how much stretch is there in the 25oz compared to the 21oz? Thanks in advance for any info...

Smaller waist size has nothing to do with rise.  Sometimes cuts come out smaller or larger than we expect/plan/want.  I have learnt so much about sizing, old shuttle looms, "sewing shrinkage" and washing shrinkage this week I could write a book on it.  But no, these just come small.

You'll get about an inch of stretch, but it takes dedication.

That learning experience sounds like denimhead gold. With help from Paula I sized 555-01  from you with perfectly calculated waist stretch. After a couple of weeks of discomfort they were great. But I think I may have to drop these, they may not be the fit for me. The tagged 36 will stretch with work but the thigh measurements are larger on the than I'd like, I prefer a slimmer fit than that. Any plans for the 555's in the 25 oz denim?

All done with that… I figure it would be less invasive than a vasectomy.

😠 😉  But seriously… the difference between the 21oz and the 25 oz is that great? My 555-01 were not a problem to break in despite being... snug, but the 21oz is famously supple. Is the 25oz that much (ahem) stiffer?

Really? That sounds like fun. So the 666's must also be challenging in 25oz? (Off to check measurements of the 666's….).
