        Cheers!..

The fades/ streaks were much less visible after the 2nd wash, so I'm still hopeful that it's soap… Of course, now knowing that Hectic has had the same issues...  :-\

I actually did soak the jacket thoroughly before tossing into the machine

Since then, I don't use the washing machine for any of my rigid denim

I know violence is not the answer, I got it wrong on purpose

I'm going to have to go against the grain on this one and say I don't think it's fading.  My pair of 9634Z (which I believe uses the same SuperBlack 2.0 fabric as the IHSH-16, as distinct from the 9634 1.0 fabric) had this happen also, but with mine it was totally impermanent.  Actually, like Seul I gave it a subsequent soak, after machine washing on delicate produced the discoloration. The soak lessened said discoloration.  Also, wearing my 9634Z for several weeks to work and back, without washing, returned the fabric to normal deep black.

If this were due to washing machine abrasion, I'd imagine it'd be absent if one were to wash the SB garment inside-out.  I did this and the same white-ish, almost film-like stuff was still present on the outer surface only.  I came to the conclusion it was soap or hard water residue that collected in the natural folds of the spun dry fabric. Yes, I spun dried my SB cause it ain't supposed to fade and I use them for cycling and occupational attire.

Another data point that might rule out fading; I soaked my 9634Z, inside-out, in warm water upon first receiving them, hung them to dry, and still noticed this white-ish discoloration, but only on the outer surface.  I thought it was starch at first and it still could've been, but it looks the same as the discoloration in subsequent washes.  Maybe the denim really hangs onto the starch…?

tl;dr In conclusion, SUPERBLACK RULES and I don't think this is fading.
            Edit: spelling

tl;dr my ass - I read it alright haha!..  😉 Very informative read. I will add that I of course turned the garment inside out before machinewashing it the first time…

Anyway: it's hangdrying now... Will let you guys know tomorrow what the results are... Thanks for all your help and kind words... I just hope my baby will be fine  😘 😎

TWE, that is a good observation.  The superblack (all versions) is designed to leach out black from the core to the outside of the threads with subsequent washes…G

Yea, the more I learn about this fabric the more I realize it has some pretty technical elements.  I seriously love shit that has this kind of narrative and personality. Hell, half the reason I adore 😘 IH is for their creation of fabrics like this, that beautifully combine the simple function of heritage and advanced function of our more technically minded era.

I can't wait for the IHSH-16SS or the SB winter it'll bring.  Here come the anticipation tremors!

Lol, thanks for reading it Seul.  I'm just happy it was more or less coherent.  😃

Lesson learned, Beats… I just thought it'd survive a machinewash at delicate settings...

Either way: this is all good info for future IHSH-08 owners!.. 🙂

What do you guys use for detergent? That Dr Bronner's stuff?

Would the regular old "free" (no dye/perfume) liquid detergents be ok to use in a hand washing?

So did I Seul, it's not an unreasonable assumption, especially if the user is relatively inexperienced with bespoke denim.

For a hand wash I use Dr. Bonners - the sample packs are perfect for 1 wash… Machinewash I use anything natural... All in all I dislike using anything with chemicals...

hectic: yeah, it's kinda weird... The better the quality/ material, the less it's suitable for a (carefully executed) machinewash?.. It's just that the shirt got so dusty, mainly cause I never wear anything underneath, that I just felt a quick machinewash would take care of things...

I put my IHSH-08 in the washing machine without soap before wearing it the first time and have washed it once since then.  I did not see any marking or fading.  I wash all my denim and shirts in the machine on the hand-wash or delicate cycle and have never seen such fading on any of them.  However, I did see similar marks when I stuffed all of my sofa cushion covers into the machine and there wasn't enough room for them to rinse properly.  I had to re-rinse them several times and even scratch some of the the soap stains with my finger nails to remove them.

Was your natural soap shavings from a bar or a liquid?  I would think that shavings or soap flakes would be harder to remove from the clothing, especially if they didn't dissolve completely.

                                A few other suggestions:

                                1.  You may be using too much detergent.  Especially if you are washing only the one shirt.  Try washing with a quarter of the amount recommended for a full load.

                                2.  There may be left over soap residue in your washing machine.  Run it empty on the long and hot cycle a few times to try to get the extra soap out.  If you see soap bubbles forming when you don't add any detergent, this indicates that residue is present.

                                3.  For denim in general and especially super-black denim use detergent without optical brighteners.  I believe Woolite black does not have them.  I usually use vegetable soap (Savon de Marseilles) to wash my denim.  You can read about the chemistry of brighteners here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_brightener

Shirt still looks the same - wavey pattern of streaks all over it… Discolouring on collar...

Hard to take a decent pic that shows it... Direct link for bigger pic:
