Julie is reading the newspaper and just informed me that Texas is one of only 6 states that does not allow open carry of firearms.  I cannot adequately express my shock at this fact.  Texas does not allow open carry.

Correct on both points, Doug.  Nonetheless, that there are any restrictions at all on gun ownership and usage in this state is a surprise.

Isn't there a historical reason for it? Going back to the settler and new territory days

No idea- the article I read didn't go into historical detail, just noted that open carry of handguns is illegal here and that activists are trying to change the law.  It also mentioned that there have been attempts to change it in the past, but the Legislature has never gone for it, surprisingly enough.

That's expected to change the next time it comes up, though.  Texans do love guns, and frankly, it's not a law that get enforced often.  Part of my surprise stems from how often I see people openly carrying their handguns.  And if it's allowed in highly restrictive states like Connecticut and Massachusetts, it's hard to convincingly argue that Texas shouldn't go along with the 44 states that do allow it.

It's official: I have lost 10 kilograms since summer 2k13… I still look like a truckload of ugly that toppled and ended in a really ugly lake filled to the brim with really ugly fish, but at least there's less of me!..
