      @Chris:

      Given the skills and knowledge I've acquired through my hobbies, work history and years of formal education, I feel comfortable saying that in the above scenario, I would die a quick, painful death due to ignorance and general ineptitude.

      That would been my alternative answer, but I like to avoid the truth sometimes. 😃

          Great game plan, I prefer Alex Jones over Beck though. Just not enough paranoia on Glenn's broadcast for my taste. ::)

              I'm pretty sure that Chris' fate would be my own.  Even though I was born a country-girl, I've been a city-slicker for too long.  I would try my best to find a source of fresh water, stockpile food, and hope that I didn't have to try and fend off any violence.

              Yeah, Iv'e been trying to come up with a serious answer all day. I can grow 'stuff' and farm, but that requires stable conditions to get starting. I'll join you both in a mass-grave-party 😃

                I know it seems pretty grim because most of our species was just taken out by a meteor, but the planet is still in pretty good shape (probably better now because there are so few humans to destroy it), and resources seem to be pretty plentiful. There's really no need to treat this like a zombie apocalypse. We can never go back to our office jobs, the internet is down, electricity is scarce, but the world is our oyster.

                    Here's something that is always good to know, for the most extreme just in case scenarios. What grows locally to you that's edible? I don't simply mean veggies or wild fruits either, roots, grubs, foliage all need to be considered. Even in a winter climate, 2 out of 4 would be available and keep you from starving. If you don't know these things, invest in a old field guide, preferably one from your area. It doesn't take the apocalypse for this kind of knowledge to be handy.

                      I'd be interested in living on a commune. We can regulate ourselves, pool resources, and barter with each other. Who's in?

                        I could be in on a co op deal, the rest would depend on your definition of commune 😉 I like being a bit private and secluded, andam not sure how I would fair stacked like a bunch of Branch Davidians with the likes of Seul 😞

                              Exactly. I kept this quote that gets at the same sentiment:

                              "Civilization has a three day life-span. Deprive people of food, shelter (heat), or water longer than that, and you have chaos. You think we would have learned that lesson after Katrina."

                              In terms of what I would do - if the original premise is that 95% of the population were wiped out, I'd be more likely to be in that 95% group rather than the 5%.  If I lived, I'd hunker down in my place for a few weeks and let the remaining 5% stab each other, over cans of soup and a bottle of water, until the population is down to 2%. That should take one week.

                              I like dystopian movies, but realistically, I probably wouldn't last very long. Ever read the book "The Road"?

                                Given we are talking a asteroid situation, the immediate impact would only wipe out a much smaller fraction, as in if it's big enough to kill 95% on impact then the atmosphere is gone. However let's say it's large enough to kill a large number on impact, but we get pulled into a mini ice age because of it. You could still see total number of deaths reach high percentage numbers, but it would take months of starvation and folks freezing to death to get there. Living in south Fla through a few hurricanes taught me how real shit gets when the system shuts down, you have no one to lean on but yourself and whatever community you have built.

                                  Earlier I said "commune" but I think jdl1279 said "co-op" and that seems a more accurate description of what I'm looking for.

                                  I'll need some good people in this co-op. We have so many talents in this forum.
