Dystopian Planet (What Would You Do?)
-
Seul will be busy in protecting his fridge and secret stash of beers somewhere ;D.

I like your optimistic view of things. I'm of the opinion that with out power, and the ability to regulate society, you'd get a zombie apocalypse pretty quickly. Zombies are just a metaphor for unhinged masses….
Exactly. I kept this quote that gets at the same sentiment:
"Civilization has a three day life-span. Deprive people of food, shelter (heat), or water longer than that, and you have chaos. You think we would have learned that lesson after Katrina."
In terms of what I would do - if the original premise is that 95% of the population were wiped out, I'd be more likely to be in that 95% group rather than the 5%. If I lived, I'd hunker down in my place for a few weeks and let the remaining 5% stab each other, over cans of soup and a bottle of water, until the population is down to 2%. That should take one week.
I like dystopian movies, but realistically, I probably wouldn't last very long. Ever read the book "The Road"?

Seth,
Given we are talking a asteroid situation, the immediate impact would only wipe out a much smaller fraction, as in if it's big enough to kill 95% on impact then the atmosphere is gone. However let's say it's large enough to kill a large number on impact, but we get pulled into a mini ice age because of it. You could still see total number of deaths reach high percentage numbers, but it would take months of starvation and folks freezing to death to get there. Living in south Fla through a few hurricanes taught me how real shit gets when the system shuts down, you have no one to lean on but yourself and whatever community you have built.

The Road is great.

The Road is an amazing book and movie. Every time I read/watch if I cry my eyes out. Must be that I'm a father, it hits to close to home.
-
^ Exactly the same thing happens to me….apart from the crying because I'm a man and not a giant lady with a penis.
-
I've not seen the film yet.
Anyone else feel like the ending was kind of tacked on? I wish I could explain the problem I have with it but spoiler alert.

apart from the crying because I'm a man and not a laddy with a giant penis.

This is a great time to find a piece of property in an area you've always wanted to live. Back in 2014, the price for an apartment in San Francisco was insane. I think I'll venture west and find an abandoned house in SF and fix it up. I'm thinking one with a nice view of the bay.
-
I expect urban centers to implode with violence. I would try to get as far away from civilization's decaying corpse as I could.
-
I'm with Seawolf. Pacific Northwest would be a good way to go. There is a reason why the native people of North America flourished there.
I would probably try to find a functioning lab and try to synthesize medicines. I have two degrees in biology and over ten years of lab experience.
As for taking care of my family and their safety, I have more ammo here than we have members. I also have a small stash of medical supplies and shelf stable food (we get week long power outages in my part of Maryland) as well as a gas powered generator. I also have about 20 gallons of gasoline stashed
Oh, and two tanks of propane for the barbeque grill (barbeque grill is a must during a power outage)
I'm by no means a "prepper", but I'm also don't believe it's normal to rely on other people/your government to take care of you when you have the means to take care of yourself
-
I want to be as close to the Amish as possible, Their lifestyle wouldn't change one bit. I'm lucky to have hardcore hunters as friends with borderline prepper/survival obsessions, so I'd be eating good. When your buddy buys an old army deuce and a half just to have incase shit hits the fan, you know they are serious. Weapons for defense, ya got that covered also. I would get as far away from the city as I could and start a compound with my friends. I'm by no means a "prepper", but I'm glad I have crazy ass friend that are.
I'm not so sure I'd move far away from where I have lived forever. Outsiders don't take to kindly to strangers in dire strait conditions. They would probably kill you. I want to be close to people i have known for 20 plus years in a area I am familiar with and is "my turf ". Much better survival chances.
I also have a skill that I have perfected over the last 13 years. I also have collected a doomsday gentic seed bank that I've been breeding and saving for about the last 8 years. Id be a farming son of a bitch. And adam313 would move back to ohio and brew all my beer for me
I would also pimp your women with d666, and Bitch better have my money
