Panerai has some nice pieces like the fiddy, 372, Cali, slytechs, pre-a's and their vintage pieces with rolex movements from wwII or later. But chances you get them for a reasonable price are probably zero and it can be pretty hard to get at these watches.

For those interested in vintage panerai i can recommend the books from Ralf Ehrlers and Volker Wiegmann

I like the concept of the brand especially the historical line and the strap thing might make even more fun than the watch itself 🙂 i had two panerais a sub 24 from a very early batch with polished bezel and a blackseal radiomir over the years. Have gone through lots of watches during the last 7 years, some traded in some sold all was fun, now i am with my iPhone. Very cool too

      Cheers,
      David

I'm on the lookout for a watch in about 4 years time (seriously). It'll likely take me that long to find something that's not a PAM or Rolex…

For your climate a rolex would be perfect my man 🙂  😛

        Cheers,

Got a few years to think about it, still not overly feeling it at the mo. Am feeling more subtle, we'll see what happens in 4 years tho :).

I own 2 of them PAM. The 000 and the 111. Mostly my decision is based on the History of the watch itself also the straight forward face and the size of the watch as I have a bit big circumference. Also like David has mentioned, the strap game is also addicting and fun as well.

But I buy what I like and don't care much what people say or think of my taste ;-). But if you appreciate Japanese craftsmen and precision go and get a Grand Seiko. Top notch in finishing and time keeping.

On a side note, 'Rolex For Climax' hehehe

I love Panerai in terms of how they look, but they are somewhat cliche here and their popularity may skew the prices above and beyond the value.

I won't be buying a watch for a while but I love the Glashütte Orginal Sport Evolution. German and an in-house movement to boot. Is that far enough from cliche, or too far? 😉

I agree, I think that Panerai look great and I am sure they are super functional.  But personally, I would not invest that much on something that every other person I meet is wearing - OK that's an exaggeration, but you know what I mean…

I disagree with the whole Panerai vs Rolex thing. Everybody is rocking a Panerai nowadays and Breitling has become the new Rolex. As far as I am concerned. Getting a Rolex is no longer the "cool" watch to have yet they will always be some of the most iconic pieces ever made.

You may disagree with me but IMO Panerai is just a high end fashion watch.

I don't know what "fashion watch" means but if you've seen the How It's Made that documented Panerai's process it's hard not to respect them. Their popularity doesn't necessarily mean they are bad timepieces. It might mean they are overpriced and cliche, but I think they are also iconic. Love their faces and the numerals. I wouldn't buy one, but I like them.

I'm not knocking Panerai. I like them just would never buy one again. My brother has one and my father owned 3. Ten years ago I was in love with Panerai but, now not so much. They are all over the place and they sell for top dollar because of their popularity.

I would much rather pick up a excellent condition used Submariner then own a Panerai again.

Panerai lost a lot of respect with the '318 scandal' and then just the large in your face sizing turns a lot of people off.  That said they're probably beat up more than they should be.  Takes a long time to win people back.

I know 'they are everywhere' sentiment and the feeling of seeing the same watch/stuffs worn is a bit not so good? But when I bought mine I was in Ghana and now that I'm in sweden, you don't see a lot of them. Here they are more interested in brietling, omega,AP and Rolex.

Glashutte is a nice watch. Mc Clain.

Around here, nothing is as common as Rolex (for high end watches, that is).  For a long time in the oil industry, the custom was to go buy a Rolex as soon as you got your first good well.  It made sense- Rolex used to be tough, accurate, high quality watches at a premium, but still acceptable, price.  After a while, it was part of the standard dress for the oilfields and the office.  As a result, there are still lots of guys wearing the Rolex they bought in the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc.
