Why do IH shirts say to wear as long as possible w/o washing?

No idea, never bothered to question H about it.  But I follow the, "if it's dirty or smells, it's about time I washed it" principle….

^You mean air it for a while, and if it still smells, then wash it, right? :). I kid, I kid (I wash clothes when dirty, generally hand soak/agitate my jeans)

My theory is that it's part of the Haraki ethos of durability and having clothes last forever and evolve slowly. Washing can be stressful to those causes.

I think he originally intended to stamp that on his jeans/ western shirt. God knows how it ended on flannels o_O

I have decided to only apply the wash when needed technique to my jeans. don't really feel i need super awesome combs and shit on my shirts. Shirt gets dirty or smells, I wash it.

I'll second Mclain. I wash my shirts, just like my jeans, when needed. Keep in mind, H's version of wait as long as possible before washing is a lot different than our (shitty) western idea of waiting as long as possible.

I wash my flannels once or twice a year. No arbitrary schedule - just based on need. It really prevents a lot of stress/wear that goes along with washing.

yup, wearing a flannel ~20 times with a t underneath before a wash is gross. 😉

wash whenever you feel the need/urge to…we're (only) talking about clothes here people and iirc IH is all about that mess. so when something is dirty/smells bad -> wash!
and f... the stress that goes along with washing. clothes are "created" to get worn and washed a lot!

Got some pretty nice colthes now and want to store them and preserve them the best way possible. That starts with good hangers but which are best? I've heard untreated wooden ones are best but damned if I can find any. What hangers do you guys use? Any addresses where I can buy some good 'uns?

Seconded Chris….for better or for worse, the time when I used to wipe my arse with newspaper to preserve the drug fund is long gone. I buy nice....I want it to stay nice. I don't smalze around wearing a skirt and full make-up (though I have absolutely nothing against it...I lived in Brighton for 6 years, if that sort of thing bothers you, you move). I just like to keep my gear fresh. Like my mountain bike. I suppose you guys don't wash those either after a muddy ride and end up fucking up the transmission, cos that's what real men do? Macho smachoe bullshit imho  😉

@Ohighyo: the fact that we all happily throw down 300 bucks on a pair of jeans goes some way to proving we're all a bunch of primadonnas. Some of us assume it better than others I suppose 😉

Basically, I can't be doing with jumping on a dirty old push-iron whilst donning my favourite tutu and my IHSH-21...That shit just ain't right. I don't mind the odd blob of mayo or baby sick on my wears but I draw the line at gratuitous filth.
But I digress...what feckin hangers are best? And where can I get some?

@bertoni's post is probably the most confusing post I've read on here all year. Very well done making such wide ranging statements in such a short period of space ::)
