Jeff, yes I have a very high instep, we took that into account when building them, but not quite enough allowance was made.  Once on they are brilliant, they'll get better and easier, so no sweat…..

maybe give them my whiskey bottle trick g?
                  give them a little stretch

A pair of engineers that doesn't give you a hernia to pull on is either ill-fitted or you have a weird foot.

You and Tat are making me think that my Road Champs don't fit. They slip on no problem. I had to add a couple extra holes on the strap, but if they were any smaller I think my big toe would be jammed against the front of the boot. I'll keep rocking them. Might try adding a small insole.

The contrast of the black under the double stitching and the dark brown doesn't jive for me.  They look incredibly well made though.

I was definitely exaggerating.  Sorry about that, it's in my DNA; I'm a Southerner, we love tall tales.  We invented the trick of holding the fish we just caught with our arms fully extended to it looks bigger in the photograph.

My RCs were bought second hand, so they were never hard to get on.  And an engineer shouldn't be after it's been broken in.  But new, for me at least, there is always a bit of a struggle.

I did have to add holes to the ankle strap on my RCs.  Christophe did too.  Well, I didn't have to, but they feel better now, and the straps look even longer, which I like.

I can't get my Lofgrens to the final hole, no matter how hard I try.  They were made for my feet.  The leather is so supple that it feels like I'm wearing a sock.  I didn't think something could feel as good as the RCs, but these do.  So these did present a bit of a struggle out of the box.  Now they are pretty easy to put on unless I wear thick socks.

                          Think it, be it.

I think the illusion is due to the side of the leather being darker, either due to the grain, the glue, or some combination of both.  My Vibergs can look darker on the stitch down too, but it's an illusion.

^ Yep, you can see that in the pic above, it is the "rough" cut edge that is darker than the face…

I had a pair of the RRL Engineer boots and they were ridiculous to get on and they were a full size too big.  My Chippewas are similar, which is why I hardly wear them, but my White's and Viberg are easy to get on.  It largely depends on the size of the boot shaft and how high an instep a person has.

I have to get a pair of those Lofgrens. They'll probably be my next engineer boot. I think the fit on my RCs is fine. If I went a whole size down I think my toes would be jammed. I'm still figuring out how engineers should fit. Dialing in the fit seems a lot harder than with lace up boots.

I (and I think Tat) can't recommend the Lofgrens enough. The only reason my RCs are in the same conversation is the Takeshi resole.  And RCs are unequivocally amazing boots. That's how great I find these Lofgrens. My favorite engineer out of the box.

The triple stitching, gorgeous Cuban heel, and I love the shape of the heel above that.

Long ankle strap, beautiful buckles, beautiful stitched storm welted outsole.

And the figure 8 vintage stitched sole, but using modern materials (vibram) instead of deadstock; this boot has a functional ethos.

                                        Think it, be it.
