I tried the upper range Shures a few years ago. I found them too accurate - that is they didn't artificially bump up the low end, as opposed to cheaper, more commercially focused earphones.

I use cans too, my closed ear ones are some ancient Sony MDR-V6 and I also have some Sennheiser HD 518 for my open ear cans.

Yeah, I use the same buds as Zwer. At the time of purchase, I tried the higher end ones which I actually liked less than the 2 series.

yeah grados look awesome! unfortunately they werent for me. owned a pair of sr80s for a day or so, found them a little too uncomfortable and bright to use as my main cans.

A-men a million times.  Loved it from the jump, but it does grow from there as you said.
